EXERCISE ON CORRELATION AND REGRESSION:

A. Perform a complete regression analysis for the following problem.

1. A board member of the Fire Prevention Task Force gathered the following information showing
the average temperature in a month and the number of fire incidences in Cebu City last year.
a) Solve for the correlation coefficient r and determine the strength of relationship
r = 0.89, high correlation
b) Find the regression equation
𝑦̂ = -10.70 + 0.57x
c) Predict the number of fire incidences when the average temperature is to 33.5 0C,
𝑦̂ = -10.70 + 0.57(33.5) = 8.395 / 8 fire incidences

Temperature in 0C (x) 26 27 30 32 34 36 29 28 26.5 25 26.7 24

Number of Fire
4 5 5 7 10 9 8 7 4 3 4 3
Incidences (y)

2. The following table shows the number of hours a molding machine can operate continuously and
the number of defective items it produced within the time range.
a) Solve for the correlation coefficient r and determine the strength of relationship
r = 0.43, moderately low correlation
b) Find the regression equation
𝑦̂ = 4.76 + 0.22x
c) predict the number of defective products when the molding machine operates for 10 hours.
𝑦̂ = 4.76 + 0.22(10) = 6.96 / 7 defective products

Machine Hours of
12 8 15 9 6 14 12 24 16 20 7 15
Operation (x)
Number of
Defective Products 7 10 9 8 3 8 12 10 8 9 4 4
(y)

B. Analyze the given figure taken from a research study and answer the given questions.

𝑦̂ = 0.0474𝑥 + 37.564
𝑟 2 = 0.6392

Source: Simiyu, O.(2020). Linear Regression: Predicting the Total Number

of Deaths from Coronavirus in a Country

1) What is the value of “r”? r = 0.80

2) What is the strength and direction of the relationship between the number of deaths from COVID
and its confirmed number of cases? There is a high correlation and positive relationship between
the number of deaths from COVID and its confirmed number of cases. As the number of cases of
COVID increases, the number of deaths also increases.
3) What is your interpretation about the equation of the regression line? A slope of 0.0474 represents
the change in the total number of deaths of COVID for every increase by 1 of the total case.
4) What is the predicted number of deaths when there are 1000 confirmed cases? 84.964 / 85 deaths
