If two full converters are connected back to back as

shown in Fig. 1 both the output volt- age and load current
flow can be reversed. The system will provide four
quadrant opera- tion and is called as dual converter. Dual
converters are normally used in high power variable
speed drives. If alpha_{1} and alpha_{2} are the de- lay
angles of converters 1 and 2 respectively, the

corresponding average output voltages are V o1 and V o2
.

Fig. 1: Single-phase dual Converter

The delay angles of converters are controlled in such a

way that one converter operates as a rectifier and other
converter operates as an inverter, but both converters
produce the same average output voltage. Fig. 1 (b)
shows the output waveforms for two converters, where
the two average Output voltages are the same. The
average output voltage of con- verter 1 is, V o1 =
(2V_{m})/pi cos alpha 1 and for converter 2, output
voltage is, V o2 = (2V_{m})/pi cos alpha 2 Since one
converter is rectifying and Otherone is inverting,

DEPT.of EEE,SCE. 4
If alpha_{1} and alpha_{2} are the delay angles of
converters 1 and 2 respectively, the corresponding aver-
age output voltages are .
V o1 =-V o2or
cos alpha 1 =-cos alpha 2
alpha_{2} = pi - alpha_{1}
Since the instantaneous output voltages of two converters
are out of phase, there will be an instantaneous voltage
difference and this will result In circulating current
between two con- verters. This circulating current will
not flow through the load and is normally limited by
circulating current reactor L_{1} as shown in Fig. 1.
The dual converters can be operated with or without
circulating current, only one con- verter operates at a
time. When circulating current is not present however,
Other con- verter is completely blocked by inhibiting
gate pulses.

Applications

1.DC Motor Control: Single-phase dual

converters can be used to control the speed and direction

of DC motors in applications like conveyor belts, lifts,
and cranes.

2 . Battery Charging Systems: They are

employed in battery charging systems for electric

vehicles, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and
renewable energy systems to efficiently regulate the
charging process.

3. AC Voltage Regulators: Single-phase dual

converters can be utilized as AC voltage regulators to

regulate the voltage supplied to sensitive equipment, such
as medical devices and laboratory equipment.

5. Frequency Conversion: Single-phase dual converters
can be used for frequency conversion in applications like
aircraft power systems and military equipment where
different frequencies are required.

6. HVDC Transmission: In some cases, single- phase

dual converters are employed in high-voltage direct
current (HVDC) transmission systems for converting AC
power to DC power and vice versa, facilitating efficient
long-distance power transmission.

7. Variable Speed Drives: They are used in variable

speed drives for appliances such as washing machines,
fans, and pumps to control the speed of the motor
according to the load requirements, leading to energy
savings and improved performance.
