CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter is divided into six parts: (1) Background of the study, (2) Conceptual

Framework, (3) Statement of the Problem, (4) Definition of Terms, (5) Significance of the study,

and, (6) Delimitation of the study.

Part One, Background of the study, includes the potential contribution of the study,

glimpse of related literature and studies, and the discussion of the identified research gap.

Part Two, Conceptual Framework, shows the relationships of the key concepts involved

in the study. Lines and arrows are used to show relationships and connections between variables.

Part Three, Statement of the Problem, indicates the purpose of the investigation generally

and specifically use both descriptive and inferential questions. The null hypothesis is stated after

the inferential question.

Part Four, Definition of Terms, alphabetically lists and defines the constructs and

variables in study for clarity and understanding.

Part Five, Significance of the study, includes the benefits to be derived from the results of

the study.

Part Six, Delimitation of the study, gives the brief and concise scope or boundaries of the

study.

Background of the Study

Guide (remove texts in red fonts when done): Discusses briefly the research problem and gap

and mainly answers the “What” and “Why”. There are many forms/formats/theories to follow in

writing the background of the study as a guide to its content and structure. You as a researcher

may choose or it may vary how you perceive yourself as a researcher and connects it to your

preference of writing your background of the study.

Conceptual Framework

Guide (remove texts in red fonts when done): It identifies and shows the relationship of variables

in the study. Connective symbols are very critical in the paradigm as prelude to the reader on how

the research questions will be stated and the parameters of variables in the study. Use the

collected literature and studies to identify the variables in your conceptual framework. Use

connectors such as lines and lines with arrowheads to show which type of variable is being

observed, controlled, and measured in the framework.

Statement of the Problem

Guide (remove texts in red fonts when done): – it contains 3 parts, General Objective, Specific

Research Questions, and Hypothesis.

 General Objective – Mainly state the essential objective of the study. It must specify the

participants, time interval, research design, and variables.

 Specific Research Question

1. Descriptive Research Question DRQ – It mainly focuses on answering

quantitatively/qualitatively the collected descriptive data.

2. Inferential Research Question IRQ – It seeks to answer the significance of the

relationship of variables. It is a yes-no question appended mostly with the word

“significant”. It implies that the researcher is interested in the significant numeric

details of the relationship between variables.

 Hypothesis – There is a hypothesis if an inferential research question IRQ is stated in the

specific research question.

For example

This study aims to describe/determine the effect of the Science Engagement Clinic on the

Physics Achievement of Grade 11 STEM students in the Second Quarter of School Year 2020 to

2021. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following research questions.

1. What is the level of Physics achievement of the participants as a whole and when

grouped by sex and section?

2. Is there a significant difference in the level of Physics achievement before and after the

participants are exposed to the Science Engagement Clinic when grouped by sex and

section?

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant difference in the level of Physics achievement before and after the

participants are exposed to the Science Engagement Clinic when grouped by sex and

section.

Definition of Terms

Guide (remove texts in red fonts when done): It conceptually and operationally defines the main

variables and intervention of the study.

 Conceptual Definition – a definition of the main variable and intervention taken from

books, journals, dictionaries, etc. with proper citation.

 Operational Definition – a definition of the main variable and intervention based on its

“use” in the study.

For example

Academic Performance. It is the outcome of education and knowledge gained which is

assessed by marks by a teacher and/or educational goals set by students and teachers to be

achieved over a specific period (Narad and Abdullah, 2016).

In the study, academic performance refers to the final general point average of the

participant in the first semester of the school year 2022-2023.

Significance of the Study

Guide (remove texts in red fonts when done): It enumerates the beneficiaries i.e. Students,

Teachers, School Administrators, Other Researchers, etc., and their benefits to the study. Identify

at least 5 beneficiaries of your research and discuss what they can benefit from your study.

For Example

Learners. As the center of the teaching and learning process, the learners are allowed to

nurture their talents and passions. They take control of their learning during the unit of work being

taught. In inquiry–based learning, learners were encouraged to have creativity and be actively

involved in the teaching and learning process.

Science Teachers. The findings of this study would help teachers as to how much should

consider in their instructions to ensure the effectiveness and relevance of their lessons while

employing inquiry–based learning. Through ReSTEd INSET, they will be reminded of the different

factors that they should consider when expecting a good performance from their learners in the

class. Here, they will be guided on how effective a particular instruction is to the other, by

knowing the kind of context of learners that they have, and the best teaching approach that they

may apply. Based on this awareness, they will be able to employ effective learner-centered

teaching methods that may enhance the positive study habits of learners towards their studies. It

also hoped that the result of this study would enable the teachers to develop good rapport with

their learners that could create an environment that is most conducive for learning.

Delimitation of the Study

Guide (remove texts in red fonts when done): It specify the limitations, parameters and inclusions

of the study, variables and sample participants.

For example

This study aims to determine the Level of Environmental Management in Waste

Disposal among STEM 12 Students of Iloilo City National High School, Molo, Iloilo City during

School Year 2019-2020. The descriptive research design will be used in the study. The subject of

this investigation will be the STEM 12 students of Iloilo City National High School. This study

will focus on sex and class groupings as independent variables and Environmental Management

in Waste Disposal as the dependent variable. The data needed for this investigation will be

gathered through the use of researcher made instruments. The data gathering instruments will be

composed of two parts. Part one, for respondents’ personal information, the sex and class

groupings as the independent variable and the second part will be the questions about

environmental management in waste disposal as the dependent variables. For descriptive analysis

the mean will be used to describe the data to be gathered. For inferential analysis, the t-test for

independent samples and ANOVA will be used to determine if there is a significant difference.

All level of significant will be set at .05 alpha.
