D. Presentation of the New Lesson (Lesson

Proper)

To further deepen your knowledge

on verbal, A verbal is a form of a
verb used as an adjective, adverb, or
noun.

Example:
The word ‘go’, ‘going’ and ‘to go’
are action words that are used in a
sentence that states an action of
proceeding and moving to another
place.
And in the form of verbal we can use
these words differently. Where they
can act as an adjective, adverb or a
noun.
Yes Ma’am.
Do you understand the use of verbal?

If that so, I would like to give a short

activity where you will identify the
verbal that is used and describe how
it is being used in the sentence. Bring
out a sheet paper, ½ crosswise.

Activity:
1.) Cath writes novels.
2.) Writing is fun.
3.) The smiling baby has dimples.
4.) He sings loudly.

If you’re done, may I call Ma’am they have different use in the
someone to read and explain sentence.
her/his answer. 1.) The word “write” represents an
action or a verb.
2.) The word “writing” acts as a noun
in the sentence.
3.) The word “smiling” acts as an
adjective and it describe the word
baby.
4.) The word “loudly” is an adverb
that modifies the verb sings.

That’s correct!
So, class it seems like you all have
understand the use of verbal in
sentences.
Verbal comes in three different
types:
a.) Infinitives
b.) Participle
c.) Gerund
Each of these types of verbal is
incredibly common in both simple
and complex sentences

Let’s begin with Infinitives.

Infinitives are the most basic forms
of verbs that do not have a subject,
tense, etc. Infinitives can function as
either an adjective, adverb, or noun.
You can recognize infinitives in
English by the presence of the
preposition “to” in front of the verb.
(Student’s answers may vary)
Who can give me an example of
using infinitive in a sentence?
All of you are correct.
Always remember that To + Verb is
the form of an infinitive.

Let’s move on to the next type of

verbal which is the Gerund.
Gerund is the present progressive
form of a verb used as a noun. It
always ends with -ing.

Example:
Dancing is not allowed inside the
library.
Can you identify the gerund in this
sentence?
Ma’am, the word ‘dancing’ is the
gerund and the subject in the
sentence.
Like nouns, gerunds can function in
various ways in a sentence.
Here are the examples of gerunds in
different functions:
Running is Olivia’s favorite activity.
(Subject)
Olivia loves running around her
block. (Direct object)
Olivia spends her free time running.
(Indirect object)

Do you understand the functions of a

gerund in a sentence?
Yes Ma’am!

Now let’s proceed on to the last type

of verbal which is the Participle.
A participle is the present
progressive tense (-ing) or past tense
of a verb use as an adjective which
has -ed in the end of a verb.

Example:
Frightened, the panicking boy
jumped away from the spider.
Frightened, the past participle of the
verb to frighten, describes the noun
boy.
Panicking is the present participle
form of the verb, to panic. It modifies
the noun boy

Two types of Participle:

1. Present Participle- it ends in -ing.
Ex.: The dogs reacted to the
applauding crowd.
Can you identify the participle used
in this sentence? The word “Applauding” is the
2. Past Participle- usually ends - adjective that modifies the noun
d,ed,en,n. 'crowd'
Ex: The abandoned house in town is
like a horror house.
Can you identify the participle used
in this sentence?
The word abandoned is a verb form
but in this sentence it acts as an
adjective that describes the noun
‘house’.

None Ma’am, we understood the

lesson.
E. Developing Mastery

Do you understand the difference of

the three types of verbal and their
uses? Do you have questions
regarding our topic? Yes Ma’am!

With that, we are going to have our

1st activity, this will be an individual
activity. Kindly write it in a sheet of
paper.
Direction: Identify the type of verbal
used in the following sentences and

for dessert.

lesson. You’ll be performing with the
same group. Here’s the instruction
for your performance. Kindly read it.
