● Mahendra, a bachelor, was a


junior supervisor in a firm.

● Mahendra’s job was to keep


an eye on the activities at the
work site. He had to go from
one place to another.

● Mahendra had a cook named


Iswaran.

● Iswaran used to read a Tamil


thriller to doze off after lunch.
He had a strange method of
narrating stories.

● Iswaran had a strange way of


narrating even the smallest
incident. He would work up in
suspense. He would add a
surprising end.

● One day Iswaran told a story


of a tusker.

● A tusker escaped from the


timber yard. It roamed here
and there. It tore up creepers
and broke branches.

● The tusker creates panic


among the people

● Iswaran struck the elephant’s


toenail. It shivered from head
to foot and fell down.

● He told that he did so with a


Japanese art, karate or
ju-jitsu etc.

Mahendra something about
the place.

● The factory area was once a


burial ground. He saw ghosts
at night. He was not
frightened as he was brave.

● A horrible ghost of a woman


appeared and it had matted
hair and dried-up face. It was
ugly. It held a foetus in its
arms.

● From that time Mahendra felt


uneasy every night. Every
night he peered into the
darkness to see if there was
any movement.

● One night Mahendra was


awakened up from his sleep
by a moan.

● He saw a dark cloudy form. It


was clutching a bundle. He
perspired and panted. He
thought that it might have
been some trick from his
sub-conscious mind.

● Next morning, Mahendra told


Iswaran about the ghost.

● He told Mahendra that he


also heard the moan the
previous night.

● Mahendra went to office the


next morning. He handed in
his papers.

● He had determined to leave


the haunted place the very
next day.

the morning.

● Very fond of his cook Iswaran whom he


considered to be an asset.

Iswaran even when he exaggerated.

all the details.

MAHENDRA ghosts or spirits, but could not help
getting influenced by what Iswaran told
him about the female ghost.

● ‘In the kingdom of fools’ is the


story of a kingdom run by a
foolish king.

● One day, a guru and his


disciple visit this kingdom and
are surprised to find the entire
kingdom asleep during the
day.

● The guru was disturbed to see


that all the food items in the
kingdom costed the same- one
duddu.

● The guru immediately leaves


the kingdom with his disciple
as he feels danger in staying in
such a kingdom.

● One day, a man approached


the king for justice.

● He claimed that his brother


was committing his ancient
trade of theft and during that,
the wall of a man’s house fell
on him and he died.

● As the king was foolish, he did


not analyse that the dead man
was a criminal.

● On the contrary, he tried all


the people who were involved in
the death of the thief- the rich
merchant who was the owner of
the house whose wall had
broken, the man who had built
the wall, the dancing girl due
to whom the builder had built a
weak wall and the Goldsmith
because of whom the dancing
girl had to move around in the
street that day.

● Finally, the king decided that


the merchant’s father was the
real culprit.

● As he was dead and his son


had inherited all his property,
so, he would also get punished
in place of his father.

● Another turn of events takes


place when the minister feels
that the merchant is too thin to
be killed by the stake.

● The king orders his men to find


a fat person who could be
punished in place of the
merchant.

● As the disciple had become


very fat, the men took him to
the king. The innocent man
prayed to his guru for help .

● The Guru uses his Intelligence


and wisdom to trap the foolish
king.

● The Guru whispered something


in his disciple’s ears. Then he
requested the king to put him
to the stake first.

● When the disciple heard this,


he said that he was brought
there first, so he should be put
to death first.

● The king was surprised to see


the fight between the guru and
his disciple over the issue of
who should be executed first.

● When the king asked them the


reason, the guru hesitatingly
told him that whoever died on
the stake first, would be reborn
as the king of that country.

● The King did not want to lose


the kingdom to someone else
in the next life.

● The king discussed the matter


with his minister and finally
they arrived at the conclusion
that they should go on the
stake to be reborn as king and
minister.

● The king and his minister get


themselves killed by the stake
in place of the Guru and his
disciple.

● The people of the kingdom beg


the guru and his disciple to
become their new king and
minister.

● The guru agreed on a


condition that the kingdom
would function normally like all
other kingdoms did.

● The Happy Prince -He had been


happy all his life.

● After his death, his statue was


erected on a tall pedestal in the
middle of the town.

● The statue was covered with


gold and had two precious
sapphire stones embedded in
the eyes.

● A ruby stone had been fitted


into the handle of his sword.

● From there, he could see all around


the place and realized that the
people lived in a lot of poverty and
misery.

● The sight saddened the prince and


being helpless, he would weep to
see the plight of his people.

● The Swallow Bird - flying through


the city, on its way to Egypt to meet
its friends.

● On the way, it took the shelter for


the night at the feet of the statue of
the happy prince.

● The bird realized that the statue


was weeping and upon inquiry,
realized the plight of the prince.

● The helpless prince requested the


bird to help it by becoming its
messenger.

● After initial refusal, the bird agreed


and took the ruby stone out of the
sword and delivered it to a poor
seamstress.

● The next morning, as he went to bid


goodbye, the statue convinced him
to stay back for one more day.

● The bird was asked to remove the


sapphire stone from one of the
statue’s eyes and deliver it to a
young playwright.

● On the third day the bird had to


pull out the second sapphire stone
for a poor match girl.

● The weather had become cold and


the bird had developed an
attachment with the statue. The
bird did not want to leave the statue
which had now become blind.

● The happy prince asked the bird to


go around the city and inform him
of the condition of the people living
there.

● The bird told him that the rich were


making merry while the poor lived in
misery.

● The Happy Prince ordered the bird


to remove the gold foils from his
body and distribute them among
the living who needed money for
survival.

● The prince lost its covering of gold


and became dull and grey.

● The swallow bird was now unable to


withstand the cold weather and
realized that death was
approaching.

● The bird died and fell at the


statue’s feet, a strange sound came
out of the statue – the sound of the
breaking of its heart.

● Although the statue’s heart was


made of lead, it broke as it was
overwhelmed with affection towards
the bird

● When the statue was melted in the


furnace, the heart did not melt and
was thrown in the garbage.

● God’s angels took both the dead


swallow and the broken heart to him
as they were the most precious
things on land.

to Egypt to join his friends for winter

● Sees the Happy Prince statue and
decides to take a break for the night,
when head to Egypt

● Agrees to help the Happy Prince by


distributing his precious ruby stone,
sapphire stones and gold leaves to
those suffering in the town

● Accompanies the Happy Prince and


tells him stories for many days.

● Died at the feet of the Happy Prince.

● Receives glory in heaven.

THE LAST LEAF
30 Days THE LAST LEAF

● Sue and Johnsy were two young


artists. They lived together in a
small flat situated on the third
storey of an old house.

● Johnsy fell seriously ill with


pneumonia in November. Sue was
worried and sent for the doctor.

● He told Sue that Johnsy had lost


the will to live. Medicines would not
help her.
30 Days THE LAST LEAF

● Sue tried her best to make Johnsy


take interest in things around her.

● She talked about clothes, fashion


and brought her drawing board
into Johnsy’s room and started
painting.

● She also whistled while painting.

● Johnsy looked at an ivy creeper


outside on the wall shedding its
leaves. She started counting
backwards from twelve.

● Johnsy believed that she would die


with the falling of the last leaf.

● Sue told her that was all nonsense.


But it had no effect on Johnsy.

● Behrman, an old painter, lived on


the ground floor. He had a dream
that he would one day paint a
masterpiece.

● Sue told Behrman about Johnsy’s


strange fancy. Both he and Sue
went to Johnsy’s room while she was
sleeping.

● They saw the ivy creeper had only


one leaf left on it. It was raining and
seemed that the last leaf would fall
anytime.

● Johnsy awoke from her sleep and


saw the last leaf. It was green and
healthy. Johnsy looked at it every
hour but it didn’t fall even in the
stormy evening.

● This revived Johnsy’s will to live.


Johnsy admitted that she was a
wicked girl.

● She understood that there must be


a definite reason why the last leaf
remained in the creeper, and it was
sinful of her to want to die at such a
young age. Johnsy began to
gradually recover from her illness.

● Next morning Sue told Johnsy


about Behrman. He had been ill for
only two days.

● The guard found him on his bed.


His clothes and shoes were wet.

● He had painted that last leaf on the


wall that night. He caught
pneumonia and died.

● The last leaf was his masterpiece.


He painted it the night the last leaf
fell.

friend Sue.
JOHNSY
● A weak-hearted woman.

● Fell ill very seriously and had


pneumonia.

● Had the fancy idea that she would


die once the last leaf on the ivy
creeper, outside her window, would
fall down.

● Got back her will to live after seeing


the leaf leaf on the next morning.

● Her foolish attitudes lead to the


death of Behrman.

● One Sunday afternoon, his house

his life too.

is the transformation of a depraved
alcoholic through kindness,
compassion, and selflessness.

● This is a story about a beggar,


Lushkoff who used to beg as a
school teacher or a student.

● He met an advocate named Sergei


who offered him a job at his house.

● Sergei asked Lushkoff to chop


woods for him. He asked his
servant, Olga, to look after him.

● Lushkoff was very weak. He could


not do any work.

● Olga found him incapable of


chopping the wood. She rebuked
him but she was very sympathetic to
him.

● Sergei asked Lushkoff to help in the


shifting of the house, he looked
weak and unhealthy.

● Sergei thought that he should not


put him to hard work and decided
to send him to his friends for an

in a theatre.
