Fuel Level Gauge

. Using a variable resistance input, ICU controls fuel level gauge. This input is provided by a fuel tank-
mounted fuel level sending unit Resistance will vary linearly from 31 ± 2 Ohms - when tank is full to 247
± 3 Ohms when empty.
Open or shorted to ground fuel level sender circuit will cause respectively more than 250 or less than 29
between circuit 47 and ground. ICU will set a fault and gauge will show empty until sensor has 250 and
29 Ohms.

1. If gauge failed to initialize correctly, replace ICU3.

2. Disconnect wiring harness connector at fuel level sender and position a 100 Ohm resistor across
circuit 47 and ground in connector. Doing so will simulate fuel level sending unit with about half tank
of fuel. With ignition shifted to run position, inspect fuel gauge. Gauge pointing very close to 1/2 tank
mark is indicative of good condition wiring and ICU; if so proceed with step 5.

3. Inspect for fuel level circuit active fault codes.

Inspect if active faults codes are present, or if gauge stays empty even if tank holds fuel.

A. Short low is detected - Service for a wiring fault in circuit 47 between fuel level sender and ICU.
Repair correctly.

B. Open circuit detected - Proceed with test 4.

C. Not as expected - Continue with test 5.

4. Inspect if wiring or sending unit is faulty.

A. Switch OFF ignition.

B. Disconnect 2-wire connector at fuel level sender. Using a short jumper wire, make short to two
circuits at fuel level sender connector together.

C. Switch ON ignition (engine OFF) then let gauges sweep. Inspect for presence of fault codes.
Inspect if active fault for shorted fuel level sender is indicated

A. ICU sets fault code - There is continuity in wiring, continue with test 5.

B. No fault present - Investigate open circuit in ground or circuit 47 between fuel level sender and
ICU. Repair as necessary.

5. Test sending unit.

A. Switch OFF ignition.

WARNING: Disconnect negative battery cable first

sparks that could cause battery explosion. DO NOT

disconnect batteries with engine running. Disconnecting
batteries with engine running can cause electrical
component failures.

B. Disconnect batteries. Remove fuel sending unit from fuel tank.

C. Place an Ohm meter to terminals at fuel level sender connector then gradually change level of
float arm from full to empty. Inspect resistance.
Inspect if linear resistance variation from 31 ± 2 Ohms to 247 ± 3 Ohms is observed.

A. Resistance varies as above - Inspect if connection at fuel level sender is corroded. Make
necessary repair.

B. Resistance not as above - If using a sealed fuel level sender , replace it. If using an open unit,
remove deposits from wiper area and shaft contact ring using an electrical contact cleaner (see ).
Loosen deposit by repeatedly moving float arm from full to empty and back. Perform this
procedure until unit is clean then air dry it. Proceed with step 6.

6. Complete repair.
With an Ohm meter connected to terminals at fuel level sender connector, change level of float arm
gradually from full to empty.
Inspect for linear resistance variation from 31 ± 2 Ohms to 247 ± 3 Ohms.

1. Resistance varies as above - Install repaired fuel level sending unit.

2. Resistance value not as above - Replace fuel level sending unit.
