time its largest city. The city of Warsaw
covers an area of ​517 square kilometers.

The name "Warsaw"
The exact origin of the name is uncertain and has not been
fully established.
Originally, Warsaw was the name of a small fishing
settlement located on the banks of the
Vistula River. One theory is that
Warszawa
means "belonging to Warsz", with
Warsz being a shortened
form of the Old Polish male name
Warcisław, which is etymologically related to Wrocław.
Famous people
One of the most famous people born in Warsaw was Marie
Skłodowska-Curie, who achieved international recognition
for her research on radioactivity and was the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize.

The first section of the Warsaw Metro was

Capital history
The capital of Poland was moved from Krakow
to Warsaw in 1596 by order of
Sigismund III Vasa. However, it was only the
Constitution of the Polish People's Republic
of 1952 that was the first document that directly
defined Warsaw as the capital of
the country. "The capital of the Polish
People's Republic is the city of the heroic traditions of the
Polish Nation - Warsaw" - read art. 90 of the Basic Law.
Legends
Speaking of Warsaw, it is impossible to forget about the numerous legends
creating the history of this city. The most famous of them, the legend of the
Warsaw mermaid, is known not only to native Varsovians. It tells the story of
the title mermaid with an angelic voice, which fascinated the local fishermen
to such an extent that they decided to kidnap her and give her to the prince in
exchange for gold. Eventually, one of the men released the mermaid and left
Warsaw with her forever.
