Days & Times: Tuesday & Thursday 1pm–3:30pm

Qualification: No exam this term

In this class, you will learn the basics of English. We will practice speaking,
listening, reading, and writing. At the end of the course, you will be ready to take
an E1 class.

Course Goals:
 To become more confident speaking English.
 To learn about life in the UK
 How to ask and answer questions
 How to write letters (big and small) and numbers correctly
 To talk about yourself and other people in English for 1 minute.
 To talk about where you like for 1 minute.
 To talk about your life story for 1 minute.
 How to describe (talk about) people, places, and things.
 How to be polite
 To read aloud and understand what you read
 To learn the days of the week
 To learn the months of the year
 How to talk about and ask for the time
 You will have homework every class, and will choose a personal goal for
the course.

Dates: January 8th – March 27th, 2024

Days & Times: Monday & Wednesday 10:00am – 12:30pm
Location: Nova Classroom
Qualification: Ascentis E1 Reading Exam

In this class, you will practice reading so you can pass the E1 Reading Exam. We
will also practice lots of speaking, listening and writing to help you feel more
confident in your English.

Course Goals:
 To learn about life in the UK.
 How to ask and answer questions (including true or false questions)
 How to write letters (big and small) and numbers correctly
 To talk about yourself and other people in English for 3 minutes.
 How to describe (talk about) people, places, and things.
 How to be polite
 How to follow instructions (written and spoken, like “underline” or “circle”)
 To write sentences with correct punctuation and spelling.
 To read aloud and understand what you read
 How to understand symbols
 To learn different types of texts
 How to talk about the past, present, and future with basic grammar
 You will have homework every class, and will choose a personal goal for
the course.

This course will give you lots of opportunities to practice your speaking and listening and
will improve your confidence in other skills – e.g. using better grammar and reading and
writing more fluently. We will also try out lots of different tools to support your learning
in class and at home.

Course Aims
 How to identify the main idea and purpose of a text
 How to identify key features of different types of texts
 How to infer the meaning of an unknown word or phrase from context
 How to obtain specific information from a text
 You will be given homework every lesson and will choose 1-3 individual targets
to work on during the course.

Targeted Skills:
 Speaking & Listening: You will take part in lots of conversations and discussions
and practice taking notes from videos & audio clips.
 Grammar: We will particularly focus on using the parts of speech correctly.
 Reading: We be reading short texts to introduce class topics, and practice
following written instructions to aid exam preparation.
 Writing: You will do writing tasks for homework to practice different sentence
types. You will learn about how to avoid common mistakes.

2. Writing: Write 3 simple sentences with 1 capital letter and a full stop

3. Reading: Read at least 3 simple sentences out loud with accuracy

4. Reading: Have a list of at least 10 regularly-used sight words

5. Speaking: Describe someone in the 3rd person, including 3 details

6. Speaking: Ask questions (using: who, what, where, when, why, how)

7. Speaking: Use polite vocabulary (i.e. please, thank you, thanks) when appropriate

8. Speaking: Introduce themselves, including at least 10 personal details

9. Listening: Respond on-topic to questions about themselves in response to all 6

question words (who, what, where, when, why, how)

10. Listening: Demonstrate understanding of a recording by accurately answering

open and closed questions about it
