Note: All problems are compulsory.

Problem 1: 08
In a conical shaped tank, a fluid of density ρ is pumped at flow rate of F 0. At the same time fluid
is flowing out of the tank from bottom at flow rate of F and this outlet flowrate is directly
proportional to height of liquid from bottom. Derive equations describing this system. Using
suitable numerical technique, perform 2 iteration for 2 time steps (each of 1 sec) for following
parameters.
H=5 m, R=2 m, F0 = 0.2m3/sec, ρ=1000kg/m3, K=0.1, Initial condition: h=0.1m.
Also what will be the volume of fluid in tank at steady state?

Problem 2: 06
It is desired to carry out a first order chemical reaction A→B in a batch mode. The reaction
follows first order kinetics and rate constant is k (1/sec). The reaction is exothermic and heat of
reaction is ΔH (kJ/mol). The rate constant of reaction is supposed to follow Arrhenius equation
for temperature dependence. If specific heat capacity of reaction mixture is independent of
temperature and is a linear function of composition in mole fraction, obtain the set of equations
which will describe the processes completely.
−𝐸
Given: Arrhenius equation: 𝑘 = 𝑘0 𝑒 𝑅𝑇 , 𝑘0 is pre-exponential factor (1/sec) and E is activation
energy (kJ/mol). Specific heat capacity of A is 𝑪𝑷,𝑨 (kJ/mol.K) and specific heat capacity of B
is 𝑪𝑷,𝑩 (kJ/mol.K). Initial temperature is T0 (K), Initial concentration of A is CA (mol/lit) and
initial concentration of B is CB = 0 (mol/lit). Initial reaction volume is V (lit).
Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.

Problem 3: 05
Show that if
𝑥 𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝜃) −𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝜃) 𝑢
[𝑦 ] = [ ][ ]
𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝜃) 𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝜃) 𝑣
Then we must have
𝑢 𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝜃) 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝜃) 𝑥
[ ]=[ ][ ]
𝑣 −𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝜃) 𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝜃) 𝑦
What is the significance of this result?

Problem 4: 04 + 03 + 02

−𝐴𝑦 𝐴𝑥
(i) Consider the steady velocity field 𝒖 = ( 𝛽, 𝛽 , 0). Determine the equations
(𝑥2 +𝑦2 ) (𝑥2 +𝑦2 )
of streamline, streak line and path line passing through 𝑿 = (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 , 0) at t=t0.
(ii) Compute Ri,j for this velocity field. (Express result in terms of 2nd order tensor).
(iii) At what conditions this flow will be irrotational?
