1 Different Families

LESSON PLAN
At the start of the lesson, draw the students’ attention to the pictures in the Get Going section of the
lesson. Ask the students to identify the different type of families and fill in the blanks against each
picture. Assist the students wherever required and use this exercise to introduce them to the concept of
different types of families, including nuclear, joint and single-parent families. Ask them about their
families and use the answers to demonstrate the diversity of families and how each one is equally
special.
Ask the students to pay attention as you read aloud the lesson. Develop their understanding of a family
tree by using the example in the text book and ask them to start thinking about their own family tree.
Ensure that they have clarity on various concepts including various relatives and family members.
Keeping the text in mind, ask the students to attempt Exercise A by matching the answers in Column A
with the correct word or term in Column B. Demonstrate how to do the exercise with an example. For
instance, tell them “Your mother and father are your parents so entry number 1 in Column A is
connected to entry number d in Column B.” Discuss the answers with the students focusing on
conceptual clarity and helping them with any doubts.
Ask the students to listen as you read out each sentence in Exercise B and ask them to tell you whether
the statement is true or false. Tell the students to write down the correct responses in their text books
once the answers have been discussed verbally.
Direct the students to complete Exercises C and D in their notebook. Tell the students to attempt
Exercise C by completing each sentence with one of the words in the box and explain that each word
can only be used once. Give them five minutes to complete the exercise and then turn their attention
towards Exercise D which should be completed by providing a one-word answer to each statement.
Allow the students another five minutes to attempt this exercise and then collect their notebooks for
correction.
Let the students attempt Exercises E and F in pairs. Ask them to discuss and answer the questions to
both exercises in their textbooks by applying the learnings from the class. Give them ten minutes to
complete the activity. Then discuss the responses to both exercises via a show of hands and ask the
students to self-correct their work.
Provide the students art material for the Experiential Learning Activity including chart paper, sketch
pens, blunt scissors and glue. Tell them to attempt the exercise by drawing a family tree on the chart
paper and pasting photographs of their family members on the tree. Help the students where required.
Ask the students to attempt the Experiential Learning Project for their homework by making a collage of
pictures which capture them doing various activities with their family members.
Tell the students to think about and attempt the Life Skills activity in their notebooks by writing down
how many family members they have and how the students help these family members in their daily
lives. Give the students ten minutes to complete the exercise and then ask them to read aloud the
answers one-by-one.
