Intersection Proposal

Laura Pham, Julian Vidal, Joshua Gonzalez, Roman Ochoa

Intersection 2 - Major Traffic Artery
Constraints: Safety Goals:
- Minimum of 5 lanes - Safely estimated area size of both a Go
- Maximum Speed of a Vehicle is 25 m/s and Stop Zone.
- Maximum Yellow Light is 5 seconds - Small to no Dilemma Zone
- Capacity must be at least 16000 cars/hour
- Double average reaction time
Met? Met?
- 5 lanes included - Go zone: 103 meters
- 25 m/s - Stop zone: about 103.1 meters
- 5 sec yellow light - Dilemma zone 0.125 meters
- 1600 cars/hour - Width of Intersection: 22
- 1 second reaction time meters
Factors affecting the proposal
Reaction Time: Braking Distance:
- How long takes to react - Distance traveled (mph) : applies brakes
- Affect how long until driver uses brakes and until it stops
or gas when light turns yellow
- Faster the speed, longer the braking
- Longer reaction time = bigger dilemma
zone distance (longer to stop completely)
- Our reaction time is 1 sec (average is 0.5
sec)
Stopping Distance:
- Total stopping distance
- Reaction time + Braking Distance
More factors affecting proposal
Velocity:

- Speed in given direction

- Calculated by distance over time (d/t)

Acceleration:

- Change in velocity in change of time

- Positive (increase velocity) or negative (decrease
velocity)
- (a = Δv/Δt)
Yellow light intervals:

- How long the light stays yellow

- Determines time drivers have to stop or speed up
- We chose it to last 5 sec
- The longer it is the less dilemma zone there is (more
overlap zone)
Traffic Zones
Stop Zone: Dilemma Zone:

- Slow down to full stop at yellow light - Decide to stop or go at yellow

- Our stop zone is about 43 meters long light (risky)

Go Zone: Overlap Zone:

- Speed up at yellow light before turns red - Drivers can safely choose to
- Our go zone is 47 meters long stop or go
