[Scene 2]

Narration: In this scene, set in the Madrasa (an Islamic School), the Imaam or teacher is
doing attendance when he calls on a student named Rokun and scolds him about his
whereabouts. Through his lecture, Rokun starts hearing a faint noise, giving him a
headache and extreme discomfort.

EXT. MADRASA

Imaam shaheb: Mohammed Rokunddin Khan

Rokun: Assalamwalaikum hujur

Imaam shaheb: Walaikumassalam. Kono bishoyei monojog nai. Tomar urdur toh khubi kahil
dosha. Urdu lekhar moddhe tumi bangla shobdo dhukay dao. Lekin arbi toh khub bhalo.

Rokun: Ami arbi pochondo kori. Kintu amar Urdu bhallagenah.

[Scene 3]
Narration: Anu (Rokun’s friend) are walking together after the roll call ended. Rokun
takes him to his secret spot, where he spends the most time and talks about his imaginary
friend. Rokun also lets Anu know about the sounds he keep hearing.

EXT. ROKUN’S SECRET SPOT


*Rokun and Anu walking together amidst the forest*

Rokun: Hujur bolse, ami naki ghono ghono bazaar e jai. Amaar moddhe naki angreji eskul er
asor porse. Ashole ami toh Madrasar bairei jai na. Madrasa chara toh amar kichu nai. Madrasai
amar ghor bari.

*anu puts his hands around Rokun’s his shoulder, to portray consolation*

Rokun: Anu, ami toare ekjagay niya jaite chai, jaba?

Anu: Kothay?

Rokun: Jejagay ami shotti shotti prettekdin jai. Amar hei especial ghorer dhare. Asho tay.

Anu: Cholo jai.


Imaam shaheb: Dhet. Bettomij chemra. Konda bhalo konda mondo eida kowar tumi keda. Eishob
eikhane cholbe na. Mor dhare khobor ase, beyale tumi onnanno talbelem der loge khelona.
Madrasar baire baire ghuira berao. Eishob bod Akhlaq angreji eskul er chatro der shathey mishar
fol. Bujjho?

Rakun: Ji hujur

Imaam Shaheb: Sirf namaz roza korle islam qayem hoye jay na, Aqeedah thakte hoy. Islam hoilo
purno jibon bidhan. Eikhanei bedeen er loge islam er faraq. Serf dhormiyo jibon na, shamajik,
shankskritik, aurthonitik, emonki rajnitik jinishpotro kemon hoibe, Islam e ei shob kisu batlano
ase.

*Rokun puts his hands on his ears, voices in his head sound effects playing in the background
portraying the voices Rokun hears in his head with extreme discomfort*

*Anu keeps looking at Rokun and wonders what’s happening*

Anu: Madrasar pichone eto mojar ekta jayga ase eita toh jantam na. Allah, eikhane shob kisu ki
shundor.

Rokun: Tumi ar amar especial bondhu chara amar ei jayga ar keu chine na.

Anu: Shey ekhane ashe?

Rokun: Ho! Mone ase ekdin tomare ami mishti disilam? Shey amare emon onek kisu dey, kintu
tare kokhono dekha jay na. Khali she ei amare onek ador kore.

Anu: Achha Rokun, manush mara gele ki hoy?

Rokun: Amar toh mone hoy pakhi hoye jay.

Anu: Tai?

Pause

Rokun: Anu jano, amar jani ki hoise. Kaaner moddhe ki jani awaj hoy, aste aste awaj ta baire jay.
[Scene 4]
Narration: In this scene, Anu, Rokun, Ibrahim hujur, Imaam shaheb are making mud balls
for tayammum (the act of purification using stone or mud, in place of wudu, a ritual
washing before prayer), while Ibrahim Hujur expresses his opinions on Imaam Shaheb’s
speech from the last scene.

Imaam shaheb: ai taratari kor bela porar age 300 golok shesh kora chai

Ibrahim hujur: eto di golok banano ki dorkar ase imam shaheb. Arab desh e toh pani kom deikha
golok banai, amader deshi ki pani kom naki, amra eishob ken kori

Imaam shaheb: pani bebohar korte tomare keo man kore nai, tobe golok istemal kora sunnat

Ibrahim hujur: apne ekdom shoi koisen. Angrez der system theke arab der system onek bhala.
Era lakh lakh gach noshoto koire kagoz banaiye istemal kore. Eta diye ki ganda thikmoto
porishkar hoy?

[Scene 5]

Narration: In this scene, Rokun starts hearing the scound again, this time affecting him
greatly. Anu, out of concern asks the Imaam for help, where he says that Rokun is
possessed by a Jinn and to dip him in water to release the spirit.

*rokun hears the sounds again, puts his hands on his ears, then starts running around fanatically
and laughing and screaming*

Imaam: anu, okahne ki hocche?

Anu: hojur onek din dhore rokun azob achoron kortese

Imaam: ore jinn dhorse, ore mathay pani dhalo ar dowa pore oke pani te chubao

Anu: ummm, ayhay, accha hujur


Imaam shaheb: apnar kase amar jummar geyan kemon laglo?

Ibrahim hujur: onek bhalo, kintu koekta kothar shathe amar appoti ase. Ashole bujchen, eirokom
deshe toh islam tolwar diye kayem hoy na. Tolwar diye Irani Turani ra jayga dokhol korte parse,
kintu dil dokhol korte pare nai. Islam eikhane fakir awliya ra anse. Saccha bat holo, rajniti kom;
ghore ghore hoi choi lagano diyei islam er kamiyabi hasil hoibo.

Imaam shaheb: tahole amgo kaaj elem er jonno elem?

Ibrahim hujur: Na na, amra ja kortesi, er moddheo amol ase. Amago madrasay jara bhorti hoite
ashtese, etim polapain toh asei, eder bashay khabar o pawa jay na. Eder dekhbhal korar moddhei
toh amgo bor kam. Ederke rajnnitir jonno istemal kora thik noy.

[Scene 6]

Narration: It is the next morning, Imaam shaheb is dipping Rokun in the water in order to
release the spirit possessing him.

Imaam shaheb: Chol, ei jinn charaite hobe, chol. Panite chubaile shob jinn chaira dibe.

Imaam shaheb: Ek, dui, tin…..Ei thanda ore gaye lagtesena, lagtese jinn er gaye. Shaat, aat, noy,
dosh. Ei betna ore gaye lagtese na, laagtese jinn er chandi te. Aro chuba.

Ibrahim hujur: Thamen! Hujur Thamen!

Ibrahim Hujur: bas, bas, house ar kora laghbe na… bondho koren…

Imaan shaheb: Kire ow ar uthena ken? Uth! Ay Rokun! Ayhay ki hoilo?

Anu: Ishh

Everyone: Ki hoilo Rokun er!

Narration: In this scene, Anu, Rokun, Ibrahim hujur, Imaam shaheb are making mud balls for
tayammum (the act of purification using stone or mud, in place of wudu, a ritual washing before
prayer), while Ibrahim Hujur expresses his opinions on Imaam Shaheb’s speech from the last
scene.

Narration: In this scene, it is night, and Rokun starts hearing the sound again, this time affecting

Narration: It is the next morning, Imaam shaheb is dipping Rokun in the water in order to release
the spirit possessing him.

Intro:
Good Afternoon guys. Today, we will be playing an excerpt from the story written and directed
by the amazing Bangladeshi filmmaker Tareque Masud. This movie takes place right before the
Liberation war broke out in Bangladesh with Pakistan. At a time like this, the country was
divided between the freedom fighters and the razakars, who were Bangaldeshis sympathizing
with the oppressive rule of the Pakistani Military. These sympathizers upheld extremist
ideologies surrounding Islam.

Even though the story revolves around the life of Anu, played by Nazifa, and his family, we will
focus on the story of Rokun, Anu’s best friend in the film. This sub-plot takes place primarily in
a Madrasa, which is an Islamic school. However, in the context of 1971 Bangladesh, Madrasas
played a crucial role in entrenching extreme Islamic ideologies onto children and using them to
fight for Pakistan, in the name of Islam. In our story, we showcase the extremism in these
Madrasas and how such an ideology was detrimental.
Why did we choose this?
There are three main reasons we chose this play by this specific author. The author we chose is a
peripheral Bangladeshi writer, Tareque Masud as he is not much of a well known author and is
one that is writing about unknown stories of the Bangladesh liberation war and the clashes that
come against religion. As mentioned previously, the movie is autobiographical, drawing from the
author’s own experiences as he studied in a Madrasa and then his education was interrupted by
the liberation war. The story highlights a side of the Liberation War that is really painful to
Bangladesh history, and again is not talked about very often. In the war, the enemies weren’t
merely the Pakistani military, it was also the political installation of Rajakars, who were
Bangladeshi sympathizers of Pakistani rule. So, in the name of religion, they justified the killing
and rape of countless Bangladeshi people. The story taking place in the context of Madrasa in
Bangladesh is not something that is touched upon, making it peripheral as well, so we wanted to
highlight that.
