Title: Functional Group analysis

Problem Statement: you went to the supermarket and noticed two types of oil on the shelf.
Stephanie's olive oil and Harry's coconut oil. They both claim to be the healthier choice as it
contains more unsaturated fats. Plan and design and experiment to investigate this claim.

Hypothesis: Harry's coconut oil is healthier than Stephanie's olive oil as it contains more
unsaturated fats.

Aim: To determine if Harry's coconut oil contains more unsaturated fats than Stephanie's
olive oil by reaction with aqueous bromine and reaction KMnO₄/H⁺

Apparatus and Materials: aqueous bromine, samples of oils, conical flask, KMnO₄/H⁺,
beaker, measuring cylinder, stopwatch

Procedure:
1. using a beaker, pour 25 ml of coconut oil to a 250 ml conical flask.
2. Using a 10 ml measuring cylinder, add 10 ml of aqueous bromine to the conical flask
and start the timer.
3. Record the time taken for the reddish brown bromine to be decolorized.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 Using olive oil
5. Repeat steps 1 to 3 Using KMnO₄/H⁺ with coconut oil
6. Repeat steps 1 to 3 Using KMnO₄/H⁺ with olive oil

Controlled Variables:
● Volume of oil.
● Volume of KMnO₄/H⁺
● Volume of Bromine
● Temperature of environment
● Amount of light present

Manipulated Variables:
● types of oil

Responding Variables
● Time taken for colour change

Expected Results:

Treatment of Results

If Harry's coconut oil quicker decolorizes bromine and KMnO₄/H⁺ then it contains more
unsaturated fats than Stephanie's olive oil and therefore is the healthier option.

Precautions:
● Clean and condition apparatus
● Wear PPE throughout the duration of this experiment
● Ensure the samples are not contaminated or expired

Assumptions:
Only reactions will occur at the Carbon double bond and nowhere else.
