1. How do you feel while you are conducting the interview? Please elaborate.

I felt comfortable having a conversation with them because I know them and I
know their tendencies. I am a regular customer in two of the interviewees, my mom is
the godmother in one of the other interviewees, and I am close with the two teenagers
that I interviewed. I got interested about their different responses to the same prompts –
most understood what the point of the question was, while some did not. It is also
comforting that me and my interviewee could freely laugh whenever we find something
funny.
2. Who do you think among your participants is most knowledgeable about gender and
development?
The female teenager because she, herself is part of the community. Basing from
her posts on her social media accounts and my experiences with her, she is bisexual –
attracted to both men and women, but leans heavily to men.
3. Who do you think is the least knowledgeable about gender and development?
The grandmother. I am not sure if she did not just understand my questions or
she really do not know how to answer my questions. I barely got information from her
and most of the time, I had to explain the concepts to be able to get an answer from her.

5. What are your conclusions after analyzing their responses?

I can conclude that people my age and the mother are more welcoming in terms of
homosexuality and the other gender that exists. They are also in favor of letting the person
express how they want to – and that includes wearing skin tight clothes and short clothes or not
being circumcised. They believe in the “my body, my choice” slogan. Whilst the father and the
grandparent stuck with the classic beliefs that men are for women and vice versa.
Homosexuality, although they don’t classify it as immoral, but they see it as an ugly sight or
“pangit sa paningin.” If there is one thing almost all of them agreed upon, it is that gender and
sex has nothing to do with the clothes, the jobs, the sports, and attire, except for the
grandmother, who believes that working is for the men, and that some sports, like basketball,
and volleyball, is assigned to a specific gender.

6. What are your learning insights after conducting this activity?

I have learned that older people sticks to their belief more instead of adapting or
changing to the present time. As mentioned above, the father and the grandmother, who are in
their 40s, sees homosexuals displaying affection as hideous, whilst the mother, and the
teenagers do not care. The younger ones are also more open to changes that they deem would
not affect the society as a whole. Not being circumcised? Wearing skin-tight clothes? They do
not care because that is your business and not theirs. Finally, the grandmother is clueless about
the difference between sex and gender, the father was not as clueless, but his response to my
question about the difference was outright outlandish and hilarious, which means that gender
education is still lacking in the country. Perhaps that is the reason why the two of them opposed
having same sex marriage, or it might be a matter of choice and religion. Whatever the reason
might be, the whole activity made me realize that gender education is lacking in our country, but
we are certainly on the right path of making everyone aware of it.
