COPPER MEMORIAL CENT

It was the 50th anniversary of the lincoln cent, and time for a design change. Changed from the
“wheat ears” to a design depicting the front of the lincoln memorial. This is a very long and very
interesting series for the Lincoln cent.
The biggest change that took place over this series was the 1982 switch from the 90% copper
“bronze” alloy to copper-plated zinc.

1960
Known best for their large date and small dates, 1960’s coins are a real fun coin. They cause
quite a buzz when released and the small date varieties still demand a premium over their larger
couterparts. They claim the title for most classifications of any year of coin. These coins also are
known for copious die breaks and errors.
The mpst notable variaty is the small date over large date doubled-die
Minted in philly and denver.

1961 - minted in philly and denver
This year, the Philly mint seemed to clean up their act a bit. They doubled the amount of proof
coins they made, while nearly halving the amount of repunched mint marks. However, the
Denver mint worsened. With the speed they were trying to produce circulation cents, the coins
themselves ended up being very poor quality. A 1961-D cent does not exist today in MS67 or
above.

Despite low strike quality, and many die cracks/errors, 1961 didn’t have any notable errors. The
main things to look for is a RPM.

1962
This year was absolutely riddled with double dies, although only ranging from moderate to
minute. Die chips were also abundant, and demand little to no premium.
However, there was really only one easily notable variety, as listed below.

1962 DDR - light spread in USA, mostly in AMERICA

1963 minted in philly and denver

1963 was an interesting year for the penny because in late 1962, the mint chose to change the
composition of the penny from 95% copper and 5% a zinc and tin mixture. They took the tin out
of the coin, making it 95% copper and 5% zinc. People decided to hoard coins for their melt
value then, which led to a coin shortage for the next couple years.
There's only one real prevalent variety, and its a fairly rare class. You can see it below!

1963-D DDO
Doubling only prevalent on 3
Like the previous years, 1964 was an experimental year for the mint.
1964-D DDR

1965 was a very slow year in terms of coin collecting. There wasn’t any really notable errors,
despite all the coins only being minted by philly.

1966 was also a slow year for coin collecting. All the coins were minted in philly, yet there is very
few errors, and none of them are visible to the common collector.

1967 same fucking thing

1968 was still a slow year, despite being minted in all 3 mints.

1969 was a revival in terms of coin errors. The last four years were fairly dry, but we have
several notable varieties in this very funny numbered year.
