Foreign trade plays a fundamental role in the Colombian economy. In 2023, despite the global
slowdown, some departments of the country achieved positive growth in their exports. This
essay analyzes export performance in 2023, with emphasis on the growth of Antioquia and
Risaralda, and explores strategies to replicate these successes in other departments.
According to Forbes Staff (2024), a percentage growth in Antioquia's exports was presented in
2023: Antioquia, the largest exporting department in Colombia, experienced a growth of 6.3% in
its exports in 2023, reaching a total of US$7,664 million. This growth is significant compared to
the general drop of 12.9% in the country's exports, this means that this increase in exports made
the department's economy more dynamic, generating more income for it.
According to Analdex, the seven departments where there was growth in exports in 2023 are:
Antioquia (6.3%), Valle del Cauca (6.3%), Atlántico (3.2%), Risaralda (31.5% ), Cauca (5.4%),
Chocó (12.5%), Sucre (2.4%).
On the other hand, it was found that some of the agricultural subsectors that experienced
significant decreases in 2023 are: Meats and meat preparations (-38.8%), Untreated coffee (-
29.4%), Refined vegetable oils and fixed fats. or fractioned (-24.3%), Banana (-14.7%).
Different strategies were proposed to replicate the success in other departments, such as: the
success of Antioquia and Risaralda in the diversification and growth of their exports can be
replicated in other departments through collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Some strategies to consider are: Strengthening the institutions, Promote the creation of entities at
the regional level that support the internationalization of companies, Promote the creation of

In addition to providing support to companies, offering financing programs to small and
medium-sized companies (SMEs) with export potential, providing technical assistance in the
development of export plans and the diversification of the export basket. Likewise, the
production of goods and services with high added value is promoted, identifying new markets for

Colombian products, promoting and improving logistics infrastructure, and investing in the
modernization of ports and airports.

In conclusion The growth of exports in Antioquia and Risaralda is an example of the potential
that Colombia has to compete in the international market. Collaboration between the public and
private sectors is essential to replicate these successes in other departments and strengthen the
country's export basket. In a challenging international environment, diversification, innovation
and collaboration are key to the growth and competitiveness of the Colombian export sector.
