DEFINITION:

Is an essay that express a position about an issues. It gives arguments that


support the opinion of the writer based on the facts collected.

Elements of a Position Paper

•Introduction
-The topic is introduced background and history of the issue.

•Body of the paper


-Background information.
-Evidence supporting the author's position.
-A discussion which addresses and refutes arguments that present both sides of
the issue.

•Conclusion-
-Main points
-Summarizes the arguments
-Provides a call of action

PURPOSES:

To generate support on an issue.


To describe the author's position on an issue and the rational for that position. -
Based on facts that provide a solid foundation for the author's argument.

UNIQUE FEATURES:

•Presenting the issue.


•Asserting a clear unequivocal position.
•Arguing directly for the position.
•Counter-arguing objections and opposing positions.
•Establishing credibility.
HOW TO WRITE A POSITION PAPER

In the position paper you should:


• Use evidence to support your position, such as statistical evidence or dates and
events.
• Validate your position with authoritative references or primary source
quotations.
• Examine the strengths and weaknesses of your position.
• Evaluate possible solutions and suggest courses of action.

Position papers are usually one to one-and-a-half pages in length...

Requirements:

Your position paper should include a brief introduction followed by a


comprehensive breakdown of your country's position on the topics that are
being discussed by the committee.

A good position paper will not only provide facts but also mak proposals for
resolutions.
