Part 1. (15 points) Part 1: Read the following extract and use your own words to
summarize it. Your summary should be between 120 and 130 words long.
Sample:
The text explores the concept of happiness and encourages readers to appreciate the simple
joys of life. It emphasizes that true happiness is often found in everyday experiences rather
than in pursuing elusive ideals. The author highlights various examples of happiness, such as
enjoying family meals, receiving guidance from parents and friends, and showing kindness to
others. They also remind us to be grateful for our health, intact families, and peaceful lives, as
these are sources of great happiness. The text acknowledges the importance of love and mutual
care in experiencing happiness and mentions the collective efforts of people in overcoming
challenges, like the SARS epidemic. It concludes by urging readers to recognize and create
happiness in their lives, comparing it to the warmth and brightness of sunlight.

- Should demonstrate a wide variety of lexical and grammatical structures.
- Should have correct use of words (verb tenses, word forms, voice, ...) and
mechanics (spelling, punctuations, ...)

Part 3: Essay writing (30 points)


Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in
scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some
information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Write at least 350 words.

- Being able to present a clear position with a logical, well- 5 pts
supported argument; organise and link his/her relevant ideas and
opinions; develop these into a well-supported argument/ opinion
- Being able to support his/her argument with specific reasons, 5 pts
examples, his/her own ideas and experience to support the answer.
- Being able to focus on the topic and not include anything 5 pts
irrelevant.
- Being able to write fluently enough to make his/her message clear 5 pts
to the reader.
