CHIEF ENGINEER Standing Orders
Working language is ENGLISH onboard, all written procedures and conversations shall
be in English but written procedures, additionally can be in another language depending
on majority of crew.
SAFETY
A safe working practice will be the first objective. All necessary safety precautions
must be taken prior to all jobs, all necessary permits must be filled completely and risk
assessments shall be done where necessary. If you are not satisfied to safely carry out a
given assignment, it is your duty to inform your superior. NEVER TAKE THE RISK
DUTIES OF ENGINEERS
All engineers are primarily responsible for duties stated under “FLEET STANDING
INSTRUCTION CHAPTER 17” which is available as attachment to standing orders and
further supported by SHIP OPERATIONAL MANUAL; MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
MANUAL
2nd Engineer: Bunker soundings and bunker intake , maintenance of FO sample locker
Maintenance of Aux Engines with associated devices
Main Air Compressors and Emergency air compressor
Air reservoirs and Service Compressor
Emergency generator with associated devices
Life boat engines. Emergency fire pump
Weekly AE 1, 2, 3 lubricant tests for viscosity and water contains
Engine Room will be under watch continuously during sea passage, anchorage
and in port. Under no circumstance oiler left alone for duty.
Regular inspection of machinery shall be carried out during each watch; spaces
listed below must be checked at least once at each watch,
Steering gear room (to be recorded in engine log book with any findings)
Provision stores & compressors
Funnel Casing
Air Condition Room
Nitrogen Generator Room (regarding safe entry procedures)
Vent Heads around accommodation
Funnel exhaust outlet for running machinery (day time only)
Following parameters and conditions shall be monitored properly during each watch,
Main Engine control position shall be on bridge and main engine max RPM shall
be limited acc to sea and engine conditions. Any alteration on Main engine RPM limit
setting shall be first consulted to Chief Engineer.
Main engine L/O pressure and filter diff pressure, As there is no stand-by start for
main engine lubricating oil pumps, parameters for lubricating oil must be under
supervision at all times.
One of the Aux engines shall be at St-by mode and stand-by Aux Engine shall be
on MGO in case blackout caused by any failure at HFO module. This will not applied if
all three engines are running during port operations. All three shall be on HFO while
running. As there is no auto load sharing and frequency adjustment, such parameters shall
be checked and adjusted manually.

Sounding of all double bottom tanks including cofferdams shall be checked once
a day
Soot blowing of economizer shall be carried out at 3 rd Eng. watch, only while ship
is sailing first consulting bridge to ensure there is no cargo transfer or tank cleaning in
progress.
Upon completion of each watch “handover of watch” form shall be filled and
filed. Any ongoing transfer or abnormality in any machinery must be clearly described to
taking-over team.
Watch keeping engineer is solely responsible for engine room during his/her
watch period and any test/maintenance which need to be carried out in engine room must
first informed to watch keeping engineer.
During watch period, watch keeping engineer and oiler shall not carry out any
work outside engine room and shall not be occupied by any task for a long period in
engine room. Periodical inspection of machinery must be ensured.
ENERGY CONSERVATION
All engineers shall pay attention to energy conservation and fuel save.
Unnecessary operation of high power machinery shall be avoided. Number of running
generators shall be kept at minimum regarding safe load of DG sets. Heating of fuel
storage tanks shall be done during voyage via waste heat economizer and aux boiler shall
not be used for HFO storage tank heating while WHB not in operation as applicable.
Proper communication and attention shall be assured for deck operations to prevent usage
of excessive air or steam which can cause high fuel consumption.
Upon calling Chief Engineer, watch keeping engineer must take all precautions as still
responsible for watch.
NIGHT ORDERS
Chief Engineer’s night order book must be read,understood and signed by all
watch keeping engineers.
