1 Introduction

This document applies to three versions of the Traction Control Board CAN:
GAA26800KA1, GAA26800KA2 and GAA26800KA3.
The board functions is a microprocessor based car control system. It is used to control the
operation of a single elevator car. The TCBC is basically an evolution of the TCB known in
MCS220MRL and MCS220GeN2 installations.
The TCBC supports CAN-Bus interface to Drive, Remote Control (via the new Service
Panel Board CAN, SPBC in the E&I Panel) and to Car, also. It was developed to meet the
requirements of the flat controller series of the Otis 2000 machine room-less elevator control
system (Otis2000MRL) for new equipment.

1.1 Application MCS220-C GEN2

The schematic below shows the basic paths of communication of the TCBC to Drive
(MCB_III) and the peripheral diagnostic board (SPBC). MCS Service Tool communication is
established either via the peripheral board, transmitted via CAN, or by the on-board Serial
Link.

2 System Limitations

2.1 Operational Control

SAPB Simplex
DCL / FCL Simplex, Duplex, Triplex

2.2 Maximal 21 Stops or Openings

Sets of fixed Remote Station addresses allow configurations up to 16 or 21 stops / open-
ings, respectively (Special application for Korea up to 27 floors).
For Triplex, maximum number of openings is 48.

2.3 Fixtures
The controller interfaces OTIS 2000 fixtures. For the GeN2-R1 Application only one Hall
Fixture arrangement HFA is available.

2.4 Door System Interface

The TCBC is designed for Door Systems with Remote Serial Link interface, only. Those
Door Systems are e.g. DCSS5 or AT120. In general rear doors are supported, but refer to
limitations by stock controller or counties mentioned in the Standard Equipment Binder.
No discrete DO or DC signals are generated in the controller cabinet.

3 The MCS – TCBC System

3.1 General Description

The MCS-TCBC System is an element of the Modular Control System MCS.
MCS-TCBC is defined as a combination of the basic MCS-Subsystems:

OCSS (Operational Control Subsystem)

MCSS (Motion Control Subsystem)
DBSS (Drive and Break Subsystem)
DCSS (Door Control Subsystem).

The TCBC Logic Board (Traction Control Board CAN) is the kernel of the MCS-TCBC Sys-
tem. It is designed for GeN 2 elevator systems.

The MCS-TCBC System can be used as a Simplex Controller (one unit) or a Duplex Con-
troller (two units) or a Triplex Controller (three units).

3.2 The Elevator Control System

The Traction Control Board (TCBC) is the central control Unit of the system. It is a Logic
Board where all the elements necessary to control the elevator are integrated:

- DC Power Supply (AC input from transformer),

- DC Power Supply for SPBC and its charge Circuit, CAN interface to SPBC
- Discrete Inputs and Outputs,
- Remote Serial Link (RSL) for Car and Hall Signals
- Serial communication line for DUPLEX or GROUP configuration
- Serial communication line for the Service and Maintenance Tool.

The TCBC is mounted in the Controller Cabinet. The Controller in turn is the central location
for all the electronic elements of the system.

4 Remote Serial Link RSL

The RSL consists of a Master Board (TCBC) and up to 60 Remote Stations (RS) which are
mounted in the elevator environment. Both links (Car and Hall Link) are terminated with a
Line Terminator (LT1). Each RS can operate up to 4 discrete Inputs and Outputs. In addition
a Position Indicator can be connected.
The configuration of the RSL will be done via EEPROM – Setup with Service-Tool.

All discrete TCBC-Signals operated with RSL are listed in the I/O-List.
The I/O-List contains for each signal the Remote Station Address (Addr.) and
Bits (B1 – B4). In addition an Invert Bit determines if a low-active signal is connected.
The differentiation between Output Signals (E1 – E4) and Input Signals (E5 – E8) is auto-
matically done by Clock Cycle number of the RSL-System and has not to be defined in the
I/O-List.
The configuration of the I/O-List is free programmable and stored in the EEPROM of the
TCBC. The Service Tool Function SETUP-RSL can be used to set up the EEPROM (see:
Service Tool Manual).

8 Power Supply

The TCBC uses two separate 23VAC and one 20VAC input to generate all necessary low
voltages DC levels. Note that the unregulated DC voltages will be directly influenced by the
main power voltage. Voltage drops caused by long distribution line length (RSL) must be
considered.

11 Different Remote Station Boards

11.1 Remote Station 11

11.1.1 General

The RS-11 board is a member of the Remote Station family. It provides one discrete input
and one discrete open collector output. An on-board 24VDC regulator is foreseen to supply
an indicator (Lamp or LED). The input and the output are accessible by a small 4-pole AMP
connector. A pre-manufactured cable allows an easy and quick connection to the call but-
tons. 6 jumpers allow to select the board in an address range from 4 to 63.

11.1.2 Functional Description

The board incorporates the hardware to interface to the Remote Serial Link and to one car
hall button with an integrated tell tale lamp. The board provides a regulated voltage of
24VDC which is available at P1.3. Because of the heat dissipation capability of the TO220
regulator the output current is derated to 50 mA at max. average VRS supply voltage and
max. ambient temperature.

The output is an open collector low side switch. The load which must not be purely capaci-
tive can be connected to the 24VDC output or to VRS. In any case, the output transistor is
not able to withstand a short of the load, although the LM7824 regulator provides a short
circuit protection. An inductive load can only be used if a free-wheeling diode is attached.
The discrete input In1 at P1.2 accepts 24 VDC or VRS as logic high input voltage. The 6-bit
jumper permits to program the address of the RS-11 in the range of 4 to 63.

11.2 Remote Station 14

11.2.1 General

The RS-14 board provides four discrete inputs and four discrete open collector outputs On-
board 24VDC regulators are foreseen to supply indicators (Lamps or LED´s). The inputs
and the outputs are accessible by a small 4/5-pole AMP connector. Pre-manufactured ca-
bles allow an easy and quick connection to call buttons. The RS-14 is available in two ver-
sions: B1 and B2. B1 is the basic version, while B2 allows a wire B2 allows a wire lenght up
to 150m for the discrete inputs. It also provides increased current (2 * 125mA instead of 2 *
80mA) for the 24VDC regulated outputs.

11.2.2 Functional Description

The board incorporates the hardware to interface to the Remote Serial Link and to up to four
call buttons with integrated tell tale lamps. P5 can connected to a position indicator. The
board provides the regulated 24VDC voltage to supply up to four indicators with 40mA each
(2 * 80mA, 2 * 125mA).

The outputs OUT1 – OUT4 are open collector low side switches. The load, which must not
be purely capacitive, can be connected to the 24VDC output or to VRS. In any case, the
output transistor is not able to withstand a short circuit protection. An inductive load can only
be used if a free-wheeling diode is attached. The discrete inputs In1 – In4 accept 24VDC or
VRS as a logic high input voltage. A 6-bit jumper permits to program the address of the RS-
14 in the range of 4 to 63.

11.3 Remote Station 18

11.3.1 General

The RS-18 board provides eight discrete inputs / outputs and a RSL standard serial position
indicator interface. The board is intended to be operated with existing fixtures in modernized
installations as well as with new equipment control systems. Two Versions, C1 and C2, are
available to allow a space saving and ease board fixing. While both version are electrically
compatible, version C2 will be hold in a Phoenix PCB holder for 35 mm DIN rail mounting
with straight WAGO connectors. The version C1 is equipped with angled WAGO connectors
to fit into the WAGO connector field in NE controllers. The discrete I/O lines may have an
extend up to 300m. Various loads like relais, lamps, solenoids and R/C loads can be
switched by the open drain outputs. The I/Os are protected against field typical impacts as
voltage spikes, overload and shorts.

11.3.2 Functional Description

The RS-18 has 8 I/Os, accessible by WAGO connectors. The I/Os are arranged in two
groups with four I/Os (group A and B). Each group is controlled by one ICU chip. Both ICUs
share the address line A1 to A6. The ICU for group A is hard-wired to an even address (n)
while the ICU for group B is always dedicated to the odd address (n+1). This permits to
move a board address wise through the range of 4 to 62 with 2 consecutive addresses. If a
conflict with other Remote Station occurs the L1 data driver for n and n+1 may be discon-
nected separatly from the RSL by the switches EE (Enable Even) and EO (Enable Odd).
The position indicator interface is always driven by ICU-A. Note that the ICUs will continue
to pass data to the outputs and to the position indicator even if n and/or n+1 are disabled.

´N+2´ Wiring Principle

Obove figures shows the ´N+2´ Wiring Principle which can be found in old elevator installa-
tions. The principle is based on only one wire for lamp driving and the call button. The
maximum number of wires required is N+2. The RS-18 is prepared to be interfaced quickly
to this kind of wiring if only the controller is to be replaced during a modernization. The RS-
18 incorporates pull-up resistors to maintain the call functions if the lamps (working also as
external pull-up resistors) burn out.

The 8 discrete open drain outputs are organized in two groups with each 4 channels. The
RS-18 will accept various types of loads and provides short circuit and overload protection.
Due to this protecrions there are some restrictions on what can be successfully switched by
the RS-18.

11.3.4.5.1 Resistive Loads / Lamps

There are no restrictions using resistive types of loads as LED´s and resistors. Electric
bulbs should have a quick thermal response and their incrush current should not be greater
then appr. 14 times the nominal max. current (Inrush_max = 64 DC).

11.3.4.5.2 Inductive Loads

Although the RS-18 provides an output voltage clamping capacibility, inductive loads like
relais and solenoids must have a free-wheeling diode attached!

11.3.4.5.3 Capacitive Loads

Loads with a dominating capacitive character act like a short circuit.

12.1 Floor Distances

At Gen2 normally the Normal Runs are performed. Only in case of 2 floors a different run
profile (short run) in the range of 1 LS or 2 LS is used.
1. Normal Run
This run profile is used for all runs between the floors independent on the floor distance
(the minimum floor distance has to be kept).
2. Short Run
This profile is perform if two floors are used in the range of 1 LS or 2 LS.

12.2 Openings

The numbering system of openings and levels is different from the floor counting.
Car fixtures are related to the floor levels, separately for front and rear. Hall fixtures are re-
lated to the opening numbers.
The following four examples for simplex configurations explain the relationship between
levels and openings:

Level 0 0 0 1 0 0

The rule to define the openings is:

Count the front- and rear-doors for each level beginning at front/level 0.

The software will determine the openings according to this rule.

13.1.1 Principle of Operation

The re-leveling zone is physically marked by a magnet stripe which is attached to each
door. Two magnet sensors 1LV and 2LV sense the magnet. The door zone is true if the two
sensors show a true signal simultaneously. Both signals control the relays LV1, LV2 and
LVC.
Requirements: The circuit must be able to tolerate three consecutive failures before a dan-
gerous situation may occur. A dangerous situation is given if the car enters the next stop
and the door bypass is established outside the re-leveling zone.
• Without involvement of relay LVC
If 1LV and 2LV are true the relays LV1 and LV2 will be operated and the making contacts
LV1_C and LV2_C will bridge the door safety contacts and will allow to move the car within
the door zone.
If the car would leave the door zone one of the signals 1LV or 2LV would become false, de-
energizing the relay LV1or LV2. One of the safety contacts would open to interrupt the door
bypass.
• Failure scenarios
Without involvement of the relay LVC the circuit will only tolerate one failure ( first failure à
welding of one making contact or failure of one sensor)
A second failure ( welding of the second safety contact, failure of one sensor) will lead to
permanent activation of the door bypass and dangerous situations. Both failures can not be
detected.
• Need for self supervision
The relay LVC has been introduced as an element to cover the three failure level require-
ment. LVC has an active contact in the door bypass and allows the operation of LV1 and
LV2 only after certain dynamic ‘IF’- conditions.

13.1.2 Sequence of operation under normal conditions

Initial condition:
1. SW9 – SW11 ( test switches ) are closed
2. Car is in between two landings approaching next stop
3. LVC_logic_control is high ( inactive )
à Signals 1LV, 2LV are inactive
à LV1, LV2, LVC de-energized; all N.O. contacts are open; all N.C. contacts are closed

Car approaches the re-leveling zone at t = 0ms (UIS, DIS signal become active):
t= 0ms : LVC relay will be logically enabled; LVC_logic_control = low ( active ).
t = 100ms à LVCT-Element is charged up; Relays LVC is pulled (via LV1_D, LV2_D )
à LVC_D is open; LVC_A,B,C are closed

Car enters the re-leveling zone:

t = 500ms : 1LV sensor enters the re-leveling zone
t = 520ms à relay LV1 is pulled in ( because LVC_A has been closed)
à LV1_D is open and LV1_B closed
(The relay LVC is now supplied by the LVCT element, because the 24VDC supply was cut by LV1)

à LV1_C ( first bypass contact ) is closed

Car is in the re-leveling zone:
t = 800ms : 2LV sensor enters the re-leveling zone
t = 820ms : à relay LV2 is pulled in ( because LVC_B has been closed)
à LV2_D is open and LV2_B closed
(The supply for the relay LVC is returned to the 24VDC )

à LV2_C ( second bypass contact ) is closed

Car is prepared for re-leveling:

à relay LV1 is now in self-holding condition ( via LV1_A )
à relay LV2 is now in self-holding condition ( via LV2_A )
à contact LVC_D is closed ( third bypass contact )
à the door bypass is now established and releveling can be performed

Car is leaving the re-leveling zone:

13.2 VF-Drive Shut Down

The software controlled relays REL3 can cut the 110VAC power for the VF-Dive. The cur-
rent wiring keeps the sheave brake upward permanently under power. As a future option the
Jumper R20 may be removed to control the power to the SBU by software.

14 Manual Operation & Testing

14.1 Test of the Door Bypass Circuit

The correct function of the re-leveling relays must be tested periodically by the code
authorities. For the test procedure please refer to the field instruction manual and the con-
troller drawing GAA21100AA. Three switches ( SW9, SW10 and SW11) are foreseen to
verify the functionality of the safety relays REL5 ((LVC), REL6 (LV2) and REL7 (LV1). The
switches are located in the low voltage power supply section of the PCB.
14.1.1 Safety Notice

The test of the door bypass circuits must be done with power applied in order to be able to
operate the relays. Although SW9 – SW11 are properly located, please be aware that
harmful voltage levels (110VAC) are present on the PCB. Please refer to the section 6.2
which shows board areas of higher potentials.

15 Handling Precautions

ESD sensitive components are present on the board. Handle and install the board in an
ESD protected environment.

16 Probing
For voltage test at the Wago connector contacts do not use normal multimeter probes. This
may weaken the contact and in turn damage the board. Special test adapters from Wago
are available. 231-661 for 5.00mm and 231-552 for 7.50mm.
