Christmas Night Vegetable and Fruit Market
DA Compound, Elliptical Road, Diliman, Quezon City
December 1-3, 2016

Highlight of Activity:

This activity shall be conducted every Three days (from Thursday to Saturday) of every week
this month beginning December 1 – 3 such that the said activity was divided and allocated
to the different Regions. CAR was grouped with Region 3, 6, 4A and 4B wherein they are the
first group to introduce and sell their products. Except for CAR, because of its unique
products (Highland Vegetables), they are allowed to be present every weekends to promote
their products.
In this activity, different kind of fruits from the different Regions shall be sold by the farmers
straight to the consumer, except for CAR wherein they shall introduce highland vegetable
and strawberry.
The objective of this activity is to provide an avenue for farmers to promote and create their
linkage to the institutional buyers.
Proceedings:
Day 1-December 1, 2016
Representatives from the above named Regions begun setting-up their booths. Later in the
afternoon, Agriculture Secretary Manny Pinol and Undersecretary for Administration and
Finance Berna Romulo- Puyat lead the opening of the activity showcasing different fruits
and vegetables from the above named Regions. The Secretary said that the activity is the
first of its kind to be conducted at DA- Compound where in farmers can sell directly to the
consumers without intervention from the middlemen. He further says that, if such activity
will have a good result, it could be regularized and ask the LGU-Quezon City for permission
to continuously conduct such activity.
The showcased fruits are the following:
1. Watermelon from Zambales;
2. Sweetcorn from Pampanga;
3. Calamansi from Nueva Ecija;
4. Dalanghita, Pomelo and lemon from Guimaras;
5. Banana from Ilo-ilo and Laguna, and
6. Highland Vegetables from CAR
The Farmer representative for CAR who are accredited by the Benguet Agri-Pinoy Trading
Center (BAPTC) are supposed to be the Fresh Crops Agriculture Cooperative and Bosigan
Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative, they are the one who confirmed their participation to
the said activity. however, the later was the one able to brought their farm produce. Their
Commodities are:
1. Romaine lettuce (30 kls.)
2. Cabbage (30 kls.)
3. Tomato (10 kls.)
4. Potato Marble (20 kls.)
5. Sweetpeas (10 kls.)
6. Beans (20 kls.)
7. Redbell pepper (20 kls.)
8. Carrots (40 kls.), and
9. Strawberry (30 kls.)
Day 2- December 2, 2016

The market opened at 10 o’clock in the morning. Thereafter, throngs of buyers come to the
said market. The Commodities were being sold at the following price:
Commodity Price
1. Romaine Lettuce 80/kilo
2. Cabbage RB 40/kilo
3. Potato Marble 50/kilo
4. Tomatoes 70/ kilo
5. Carrots 80/kilo
6. Sweet peas 20/100 grams
7. Red Bellpepper 170/kilo
8. Beans 25/250 grams
9. Strawberry 300/kilo

During such period, 3 potential buyers;


1. Gerardo’s Café, who operates a 24-hour Bar and Restaurant, Conference Rooms,
Catering and Canteen Concessionaire located at 121 Panay Avenue, South Triangle,
Quezon City, and
2. Marissa Remigio, an organic vegetable practitioner, of 3/f, The Arete square,
Congressional Avenue, Project 8, Quezon City 1106
3. Ma’am Jovy of DA-AMAS promised to introduce to Bosigan Farmers MPC a
manufacturer of carrot juice and potato wine, the former will supply the later the
required volume of carrots and potato.
They inquired about the possibility of delivering to them their needed highland vegetables. I
introduce to them what is BAPTC, setting up Bosigan Farmers MPC as an example, as one of
the centers’ client and accredited farmers’ cooperative being aided in terms of product
promotion and market linkage to institutional buyers. We give to them brief profile of the
formers’ production capacity and brochure. Calling cards were exchanged between Bosigan
Farmers MPC and the said buyers.

Day 3- December 3, 2016

Ma’am Joyce Bengo, Department of Agriculture-Agri-Business Marketing Service (AMAS),


Market Development Division, inform Bosigan Farmers’ MPC that there are farmers’ group
from other Region who are already confirmed to participate in the next week end market,
However, she told them if they are still interested come to again next week end and the
following weekend, a space will be reserved. Sir Joseph from the same office, said also that
highland vegetables are a must in the said trade fair, such kind of vegetables are only found
in CAR, particularly Benguet, Province. They also observed that all the commodities were
sold, except for the strawberry which has yet to be sold.
