CIVE210 – STATICS – DETAILS AND ORGANIZATION

(Fall 2021-22)

Objectives: This course is designed to be an introduction to engineering mechanics for static

systems. The main objectives of the course are to (1) provide the student with tools for manipulating
forces and moments using vector analysis in two and three-dimensional problems; (2) develop in
the engineering student the ability to analyze any static problem in a simple and logical manner; (3)
make the student understand the physical principles required for static equilibrium; and (4) enable
the student to calculate forces, shears, and bending moments in members such as cables, trusses,
beams, and frames.

Topics: 1. Introduction to Statics; Fundamental Concepts; Units. (Hibbeler Ch.1)

2. Vector Algebra: Forces in Plane and in Space. (Hibbeler Ch.2)
3. Equilibrium of a Particle: Plane and Space Equilibrium. (Hibbeler Ch.3)
4. Analysis of Moments due to Force Systems. (Hibbeler Ch.4)
5. Equilibrium of a Rigid Body. (Hibbeler Ch.5)
6. Internal Actions: Axial Force, Shear Force, and Bending Moment
Diagrams. (Hibbeler Ch.7)
7. Structural Analysis of Trusses. (Hibbeler Ch.6)
8. Center of Gravity and Centroid. (Hibbeler Ch.9)
9. Friction (if time allows). (Hibbeler Ch.8)

Problem Sessions: Regular weekly problem solving (PS) sessions supervised (online) by course
Instructors and Graduate Assistants. Purpose is to enhance understanding of
material and to allow students to follow up consistently through monitored
practical exercises. Students will be required to submit the PS problems on
Moodle at the end of their PS session at the time specified, and no late
submittals will be accepted. PS will not be graded but will be checked for
proper submittal to count in the total course grade (as per course assessment
details later). PS solutions will be posted after completion of all sessions of
the week. Further detailed instructions on PS will also be conveyed to
students and posted on Moodle, to be strictly followed. Some PS may be
replaced by regular lectures as needed.

Homeworks: Regular Homeworks (HW) will be assigned (usually bi-weekly) to be done

individually and independently by students, and will be posted on Moodle.
Purpose is to review and practice on the material taught in preparation for
the exams. Students will be required to submit the HWs on Moodle at the
day/time specified, and no late submittals will be accepted. HWs will be
graded for overall correctness and completion to count in the total course
grade (as per course assessment details later). HW solutions will be posted
after submittal dates. Further detailed instructions on HWs will also be
conveyed to students and posted on Moodle, to be strictly followed.

Graduate Assistance: In addition to Instructor’s Office Hours (as posted on Syllabus/Moodle), and
as applicable, additional one-to-one assistance is also available by the
Graduate Assistant(s) assigned to your session or group during Problem
Sessions, which will be conducted online.

IT Support: The AUB Office of Information Technology provides students with

resources, tips and support to make sure that students stay on top of their
technology-enhanced courses. Check out their page at:
https://www.aub.edu.lb/it/teachingincrisis/Pages/Resources-for-the-
Learner.aspx. For technical questions and advice, you can reach out to IT
support by sending an email to it.helpdesk@aub.edu.lb.
Design Help: You are encouraged to make use of the Interdisciplinary Design Practice
Program at MSFEA. IDPP can help students develop stronger course projects
through brainstorming ideas for projects, experimenting with low-resolution
prototyping to turn ideas into reality, brushing up presentation skills, and
developing real-world, human-centered perspectives of course outcomes.
IDPP aims to foster a generation of breakthrough innovators who can take
on world challenges.
The IDPP team also facilitates design activities for students. They are
assisted and empowered to use design methodologies to achieve remarkable
outcomes. Students can book one-on-one sessions with Peer Design
Advisors by emailing idesign@aub.edu.lb or by visiting the IDPP office (and
