EVALUATING

MESSAGES AND/OR
IMAGES OF
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
TEXT
Multimodals
GOALS
● Evaluate multimodal texts critically to
enhance receptive (listening, reading,
viewing) skills;
● Differentiate types of Infographics
through given examples; and
● Create an infographic for your program.
Multimodal text
• a text that creates meaning by combining two or
more modes of communication, such as print, the
spoken word, sound, and images
• can be digital (websites, blogs) or print-based
(graphic novels, newspapers, magazines).
• can even be live performances.
3 TYPES OF

Print-based multimodal texts
They are picture books, textbooks,
graphic novels, newspapers,
comics, posters, etc.
DIGITAL multimodal texts
This includes film, animation, slide shows, e-
posters, digital stories, and web pages, convey
meaning through combinations of written and
spoken language, visual (still and moving
image), audio, gestural and spatial modes.
Live multimodal texts
Example of this are dance,
performance, and oral storytelling,
convey meaning through combinations
of modes such as gestural, spatial,
spoken language, and audio.
MODES OF Multimodal
text
There are five modes that can be combined to create multimodal texts:

LINGUISTIC
vocabulary, structure, grammar of oral/written language

• refers to any sort of written or spoken text

• the most common mode because it can be used in a variety of ways.
• Think of all the places where you find written or spoken texts!
MODES OF Multimodal
text
There are five modes that can be combined to create multimodal texts:

VISUAL
Color, vectors and viewpoint in still and moving images
• refers to images and characters, such as marks, signs, and symbols.
• involves the use of color, layout, style, size, and perspective.

Road signs, for example. They seem purely visual because they don't use any language or
sound. Signs rely on the visual mode to get their message across. However, they also use
the spatial mode. That's why we can say that signs are multimodal texts.
MODES OF Multimodal
text
There are five modes that can be combined to create multimodal texts:

GESTURAL
Movement, facial expression and body language
• about movement and how we interpret it (facial expressions, hand gestures,
body language, and interactions between people).
• The gestural mode is important in face-to-face conversations, in the theater,
concerts, and other live performances, as well as in YouTube videos and other
platforms.
• This mode is usually combined with the other modes.
MODES OF Multimodal
text
There are five modes that can be combined to create multimodal texts:

SPATIAL
Proximity, direction, position of layout, organization of objects in space.
• The spatial mode refers to the organization of elements in a
space.
• It also deals with the physical closeness between people and
objects.
MODES OF Multimodal
text
There are five modes that can be combined to create multimodal texts:

AUDIO/AURAL
Volume, pitch and rhythm of music and sound effects
• focuses on sound (music, sound effects, ambient noises, silence, the
tone of a person's voice, the volume of a sound, emphasis, and
accent).
• Some examples of the aural mode are radio programs, podcasts, and
audio plays.
What is an Infographic
❑a visual representation of any kind of information or
data.
❑can help present the information in the form of an
attractive visual graphic.
❑the goal is to make the viewing experience fun and
engaging for your audience - combining different graphic
elements—like colors, icons, images, illustrations and
fonts—to explain a topic in a compelling and easy-to-
understand way.
❑ALWAYS include citations.
FUNCTIONS OF INFOGRAPHIC
✓ Illustrating data: Present statistics, facts and figures visually using
charts, graphs and other graphic tools.
✓ Simplifying a complex subject: Explain difficult concepts with
the help of illustrations and visual cues.
✓ Drawing a comparison: Visually compare two or more products,
services, features, brands or concepts.
✓ Creating awareness: Spread word about an important cause or
create brand awareness and visibility.
✓ Summarizing longer content: Repurpose long videos, blog posts
and reports into bite-sized infographics.
Types of Infographics

STATISTICAL INFOGRAPHICS
● make use of typography, charts
and graphs to present research,
facts and figures in a visual way.

● helps make data look more

interesting and easier to digest
than a bunch of plain numbers
or tables.
Types of
Infographics
PROCESS INFOGRAPHICS
usually make use of flowcharts,
diagrams and even timelines
to guide readers through a
series of steps or to help
simplify the decision-making
process.

Here’s an example of a
process infographic template.
Types of Infographics
TIMELINE INFOGRAPHICS
● useful for presenting
information in a
chronological order. Whether
you’re visually showcasing
your brand history or showing
how something has evolved
over time, a timeline
infographic can help you
out.
