4. Recall of Classroom Rules
Motivation-
The teacher will present two baskets
labelled as “Moved or At Rest.” The students
will put the picture that shows either moved
object or object at rest to the basket where it
belongs.
The teacher will present two baskets
labelled as “Moved or At Rest.” The students
will put the picture that shows either moved
object or object at rest to the basket where it
belongs
The teacher will present three baskets labelled as “Metals, Non-Metals and Metalloids”.
The students will put the labeled element that shows either Metals, Non-Metals or
Metalloids to the basket where it belongs.

The teacher will ask the following questions after the activity.
1. What kind of elements that are good conductors of electricity and heat, form
cations by loss of electrons.
Very good! Potential energy. (The teacher will
label the second basket as Potential Energy.
(The teacher will show the first basket as Metals)

2. What kind of chemical elements that lacks the characteristic of a metals? And
has a high electronegativity energy?
(The teacher will show the second basket as Non-metals)

3.It is an element intermediate in properties between the typical metals and

nonmetals?
(The teacher will show the second basket as Metalloids)

After the students answer the two questions, she will ask them to read the
objective of the lesson.
a. Define what is Potential and Kinetic
Energy;
b. Engage cooperatively in calculations for
potential and kinetic problem solving;
and
c. Value the importance of the existence of
potential and kinetic energy.
a. Identify metal, non-metal and noble gas and valence electrons of an atom.
b. Explain and classify the formation of ionic and covalent bond.
c. Illustrate how an ionic bond is formed.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Activity

The teacher will group the class into two. Each group will be assigned to perform
different activities. Each group will have at least two representatives to present it on
class.

Group 1 – Mapping the Periodic Table.

Calculate for the Kinetic Energy of the given
problem.
Procedure: Locate the metals, non-metals, and noble gases in Figure 1. Color the area with
metallic elements blue; the non-metallic elements yellow; and the noble gases green.
Group 2 – What kind of element has: Base on the Periodic Table of Elements. (Metals,
Non-metals)
a. Less than 4 valence electrons?
b. More than 4 valence electrons?
c. Low electronegativity?
d. High electronegativity?
e. Low ionization energy?
f. High ionization energy?

2. Analysis
After each group finalize their output, they will report/present their assigned task in front
of the class. After each group has presented, the teacher will ask the following questions:
Guide questions:
1. Group 1 Give me at least 5 elements that belong to metals, 5 elements that
belong to non-metals and 5 noble gasses?
2. Group 2. What have you observed? Who has the highest electronegativity? And
the lowest electronegativity?
3. Abstraction
Introduce topic lesson.

Ion is formed when an atom gains or loses one or more electrons.

Chemical formula is a shorthand way of writing the name of an element or compound.
It shows the exact number and types of atoms contained in an element or compound.

Chemical bond is the attractive force that holds atoms together.

There are 2 different types of Chemical Bonding.

a. Ionic Bonding- occurs when there is a complete transfer of electrons
between a metal and a nonmetal.
b. Covalent Bonding- occurs when electrons are shared between two
nonmetals.
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract electrons toward itself in a chemical
bond.

Bond polarity refers to the measure of distribution of electrons in a bond.

Lewis symbol for an element consists of the element’s chemical symbol and a dot for
each of its valence electrons.

Octet rule states that to attain maximum stability, an atom needs to share, gain, or lose
electrons until eight valence electrons are found on its valence shell.

4. Application
Same group, you will write the Lewis Symbol of the common metals and non-
metals and show the relationships among the number of valence electron,
electronegativity, and ionization energy.

Use the given periodic table of elements to determine the number of valence
electron refers to the group number where it belongs in filling up the table below.

Do this activity in 5 minutes.

C. Concluding Activity
Evaluation
Then ask a student to answer the following questions (in 5 Minutes)

You answer will be at the back of your yellow paper.

1. Arrange these elements in increasing order. (Base on Table 1)

A. Valence Electron
B. Electronegativity values
C. Ionization energy.
2. What kind of element has the greatest tendency to attract electrons? Why?
3. What kind of element requires high energy to remove its valence electrons? Why?
Assignment
1. Research on the Properties of Metal and try to explain why metals have
those properties. Write it in your science notebook.
