PERFORMING AND MENSURATION
CALCULATION
Standard table of Weights
and Measures In Baking
Converting one unit of
measurement to another
Method 1
Multiplication
Example 1 you will know the
operation to use (multiplication)
when the first number is big and
the second number is small.
Given:
5 cups =______ TBSP
As we can see cups is greater than
tbsp or table spoon.
Step 1 find the given:
5 cups=___TBSP
16 TBSP = 1 Cup
Step 2:
Now Write the Proportion making
sure the measurement is the same
position

Proportion - Equal
Step 2:
Proportion Cross multiply
16 x - TBSP 16 x
1 = 4 - CUPS 1 =4
Therefore the answer for this
question is 64.
Method 2
DIVISION
Example 2 you will know the
operation to use (division) when
the first number is small and
the second number is big.
Given:
12 cups =______ quarts
As we can see Quarts is greater
than 12 cups.
Step 1 find the given:
12 cups=___quarts
4 cups = 3 quarts
Step 2:
Proportion Cross multiply
12 4- Cups 12 4
3 = x- Quarts 3= x
12x = 12
Step 2:
Divide
12x 12 - Quarts
3 = 4- Cups
Therefore the answer for this
question is 3
ANOTHER METHOD
if you take a larger unit and convert it to a
smaller unit, you must multiply. But if you take
a smaller unit and convert it to a larger one,
then you must divide.
CONVERTION RULE:
LARGE TO SMALL - MULTIPLY
SMALL TO LARGE - DIVIDE
ANOTHER METHOD
1cup = 16tbsp
5 cups = ______ tbsp
Your paragraph text
Your paragraph text

Big to small - Multiply

Solution: (5cups)(16tbsp) = 80 tbsp

ANOTHER METHOD
4cups = 1 quart
12 cups = _______ quarts
Your paragraph text
Your paragraph text

Small to large = divide

Solution: 12cups / 4 cups = 3 quarts
