What happened? ● On 21st June, 2022, Afghanistan was rocked by its deadliest earthquake in decades on Wednesday when a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the country’s east, killing more than 1,000 people and wounding many more, according to a regional official. ● The shocks hit at 1:24 a.m. local time on Wednesday around 46 kilometers southwest of the city of Khost, which lies close to the country’s border with Pakistan. ● The quake registered at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to USGS, which designated it at yellow alert level – indicating a relatively localized impact. Where did it occur? And when? ● On June 21st, 2022. A Mw6.2 earthquake struck the Afghan-Pakistan-border-region, situated within the India-Asia collision. Why was it deadly? What was the magnitude of the Earthquake? ● There were 1,052–1,163 deaths and 1,627–2,976 injured in Afghanistan and Pakistan, making the earthquake the deadliest of 2022. ● The event had a sinistral rupture with maximum slip of 1.8 m at 5 km depth on a N20°E striking, sub-vertical fault ● The magnitude estimates are between Mw6.0 and 6.2. What caused the Earthquake? ● Seismic activity in Afghanistan is influenced by the subduction of the Arabian Plate to the west and the oblique subduction of the Indian Plate in the east. ● Seismicity is detectable to a depth of 300 km (190 mi) beneath Afghanistan due to plate subduction. ● These earthquakes beneath the Hindu Kush are the result of movement on faults accommodating detachment of the subducted crust. Were medical facilities and help provided smoothly and urgently? ● Around 376,000 people had been reached with at least one form of assistance, including 124,000 with food and agricultural support. ● 93,000 with emergency shelter and non-food Items ● 152,000 health consultations had also been provided. ● Overall, humanitarian partners reached more than 515,000 people with at least one form of humanitarian assistance. Was there any materialistic damage? ● At least 10,000 homes collapsed or were severely damaged. The earthquake's shallow hypocenter, proximity to populated areas and low building quality contributed to its destructive effects. ● Poor construction practices and building materials contributed to the high death toll. The destruction was attributed to the shallow earthquake focus and epicenter in a densely populated, landslide-risk area where buildings made of wood and mud are not earthquake-resistant. What did the government/ the world do to help the public? ● The government of Afghanistan launched rescue operation; rescue teams arrived via helicopters supplied by the Ministry of Defense. ● Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada instructed the Ministry of Disaster Management and governors to "rush to the affected area as soon as possible" and asked the international community for humanitarian assistance. ● President Joe Biden appointed USAID and other relevant federal partners to evaluate the response options. ● The World Food Programme delivered food to approximately 14,000 individuals and provided an additional 10,000 tonnes of wheat. ● Italian medical and aid organization, Emergency, provided seven ambulances and its staff to the area. Where there any death toll? ● There were 1,052–1,163 deaths and 1,627–2,976 injured in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Have any earthquakes taken place before this major one? Were the people prepared? ● More than 7,000 people in Afghanistan have been killed by earthquakes in the past decade, averaging 560 deaths a year. ● Najibullah Sadid, an Afghan water resources management expert, said,“The timing of the earthquake (in the) dark of night … and the shallow depth of 10 kilometers of its epicenter led to higher casualties.” What solutions can be implemented? ● We cannot prevent natural earthquakes from occurring but we can significantly mitigate their effects by identifying hazards, building safer structures, and providing education on earthquake safety. By preparing for natural earthquakes we can also reduce the risk from human induced earthquakes. How to Prepare for an Earthquake ➔ Earthquake preparedness is a set of measures taken at the individual, organisational and societal level to minimise the effects of an earthquake. ➔ A few methods are: ➔ Check for Hazards in the Home. ➔ Identify Safe Places Indoors and Outdoors. ➔ Educate Yourself and Family Members. ➔ Have Disaster Supplies on Hand. ➔ Develop an Emergency Communication Plan. ➔ Help Your Community Get Ready. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our Vice-Principal Ms. Sripriya Unnikrishnan for her support. I would also like to extend my special thanks to my Ms. Rupjyoti Dowerah, who gave me this golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on Earthquakes. This project helped me in learning a lot of new things through research.
