Deadline: One week after Lab

Solutions should be typed

LAB # 1:
VISUAL ABILITY TEST AND VISION SENSE
Vision Screener Lab Exercise:
Objectives:

1. To introduce the visual process and some of its aberrations.

2. To familiarize the student with the use of a specialized Titmus V2 occupational model
vision screener in measuring visual performance.

Equipment:
1. Titmus V2 Vision Screener (Quantity = 2)

Experiment:
1. Follow the instructions in the PowerPoint slides for correct operation of the Titmus V2
Vision Screener
2. Select a member in your group to test his or her visual ability
3. Input your data in Table 1 and share it with the other groups.
Preparations and Testing:

1. Students will work in groups of six and will complete the Occupational Record Form
(Figure 1). One student will act as the Experimenter (E) and the other will serve as the
Subject (O).
2. Place Titmus V2 Vision Screener on a table of conventional height with sufficient top
area to permit test administrator to manipulate the controls and record results.
3. Plug power cord into wall outlet and other end into instrument.
4. Turn power on
5. Check lenses to be sure they are clean.
6. The subject should be seated conformably at the table. Avoid positioning the instrument
where strong, glaring light will shine directly into the instrument or into the subject’s
face.
7. Raise Titmus V2 for comfortable viewing. Allow subject to make corrections or
adjustment

Lab Assignment:

A. Visual Acuity
Test 2: Acuity Both Eyes
a. Power is On
b. FAR light On
c. No. 2 test
d. 1st : Occlude left eye; complete all sections of task 2; then go back to the 2nd condition
e. 2nd: Occlude right eye, and repeat the below procedures.

1) What should the Experimenter (E) ask the Subject (O) in this test?
2) Is the visual acuity level of participant number 6 better, equal, or worse than the average
individual?

B. Color Perception
Test 4: Color Perception

a. Power is On
b. FAR light On
c. No. 4 test
d. Occlusion: None
e. Acuity: Far
1) In test 4, a participant was asked to read the numerals in the circles. The response was as
follows: A12, B5, C27, D5, E26, F Nothing. Show how to score your results, and state your
conclusions.

C. Lateral Phoria
Test 8: Lateral Phoria
a. Power is On
b. FAR light On
c. No. 8 test
d. Occlusion: None
e. Acuity: Far

1) Which participant (s) passed the test and which participant (s) failed? Discuss the passing and
failing criteria of this task.

2) Provide you reasoning as to why the lateral phoria test is important, especially for visually
demanding jobs? Give examples of at least two jobs that may consider the later phoria test as
important.

D. Peripheral vision

1) State your conclusions about the participants’ peripheral vision results?

2) What factors irritate the periphery of the eye, and how do they affect vision?

E. TITMUS Record Form

1) Rana, a 21 year-old Lebanese living in Beirut, visited the neighboring vision center one week
ago to screen her vision. She neither wears glasses nor contact lenses, but she would probably be
recommended to wear them if the test results were unfavorable. She was asked to take the
primary grade test, for no excessive farsightedness. She read line D and had 3 correct responses
and 6 correct responses upon occluding the right eye and left eye, respectively. For the color
perception test, the results were: A11 B5 C37 D6 E 16 F3. The test administrator explained the
importance of lateral phoria in process of vision screening. Rana’s response was “note 5.” Her
peripheral vision was not tested.

 Print the “Record Form for the TITMUS Vision Screener School and Professional
Models” and fill it out in accordance to the case study above then submit it with the
assignment.
 Record forms maybe complicated for patients to understand, construct a simple table,
chart, and/or graph to facilitate the communication of the results.
