Automated Hand Arm Vibration Calculator
Automated Hand Arm Vibration Calculator
Use this form to calculate the daily exposure to hand arm vibration of a worker using one or more
hand tools. See Guidance Note 5-1
Job or task being assessed -
In the first column enter details of each of the tools to be used. In the second column enter the
estimated trigger time for the tool over the working day. In column 3 enter the vibration points per hour
(as added to form HAVS or given in the manufacturer's data).
The daily exposure points for the individual tool will appear in column 4. The estimated daily exposure
points for the task, using all the tools will appear in the first line below the table.
If the number is displayed against a red background it is greater than 399 points and above the
Exposure Limit Value. The work must be reorganised so that no one worker is exposed to that level of
hand arm vibration.
If the number is dispalyed against a yellow background exposure is between the Action Level and the
exposure Limit Value. You should take reasonably practicable actions to reduce exposure to below
the Action Level.
If the number is displayed against a green background the estimated exposure is less than 101 points
and below the Action Level. No further action is required.

When you are satisfied that the worker's exposure will be below the Exposure Limit Value and as low
as you can reasonably practicably make it give them a copy of this form. It will show them what you
expect them to do.
Remember that a poorly maintained tool will create more vibration than the as new figure given in
manufacturer's data.
Keep a copy for your own records.
Guidance Note 5-1 gives further advice on the management and control of hand arm vibration.
