RECORD Linguistic fact: 12-13-years-old English students omit phonemes and graphemes that go at the beginning or the end of a word Area of study: Language use (second language acquisition), discourse analysis, language assesment Description: Secondary school students tend to omit phonemes and graphemes when they practice the second language such as the letters ‘s’, ‘t’ and ‘g’, particularly if these are found at the beginning or end of a word Type of research: Qualitative Topic of research: Morphology Purpose of research: It can be of great importance to know why students mispronounce and misspell words and how the teacher can help them correct it. Hypothesis or Research 1. Does students’ omission of letters has to do with L1 Question: interference? 2. Does students’ omission of letters has to do with a problem in the psycholinguistic process of oral comprehension? 3. Do they omit simply due to carelessness? Subjects: 10 Secondary School students Context: Escuela Secundaria Foranea #1, Chapala, Jalisco. Class 2ª Data Gathering: Video recording Tape recording Observation guide Tally chart Data analysis process: 1. Students will be provided with a topic and will be asked to write a paper based on it. 2. The papers will be review and the amount of graphemes omitted will be counted. 3. Afterwards, students will be asked to talk about that same topic and this will be recorded. 4. The researcher will compare the results to see if there is a pattern to this phenomenon. 5. The results of this research will help language teachers to design countermeasures to prevent this.
