Introduction to Electrical Systems I

RECITATION EXAMPLES – DC CIRCUIT ANALYSIS

1. Three-Phase Voltage

➢ The line-line rms value of the voltage is given by 269.44 V. Find the phasor for vAN, vBN and vCN.
Note: If the angle is not mentioned in the question, you can take angle for phase A as 0 deg.

2. Complex Power
➢ A three-phase, three-wire system supplies a wye-connected load as shown. Determine the
line currents and draw the phasor diagram. Find the complex power absorbed by a phase, and
the total complex power absorbed by the 3-phase load (shown voltage is RMS).

Note: Show how to use per-phase diagram to solve this problem.

3. Y-Y Unbalanced
➢ A three-phase, four-wire system supplies a wye-connected load as shown. Determine the line-to-line voltages,
line currents, the neutral current, and draw the phasor diagram. Find the complex power absorbed by each load
and the total absorbed by the 3-phase load.

4. Δ-Δ Unbalanced
➢ Find the 𝑳𝒐𝒂𝒅 𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 (𝑰𝑨𝑩 , 𝑰𝑩𝑪 , 𝑰𝑪𝑨 ), Line currents (𝑰𝒂𝑨 , 𝑰𝒃𝑩 , 𝑰𝒄𝑪 ) 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 (𝑰𝒃𝒂 , 𝑰𝒄𝒃 , 𝑰𝒂𝒄 ).
➢ Draw phasor diagram of these currents and find the complex power absorbed by one load and the 3-phase load if

Real, Reactive and Apparent Power
5. Real, Reactive and Apparent Powers
➢ 𝑮𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒏: 𝒁𝟏 = 𝟔𝟎∠ − 𝟑𝟎∘ 𝜴, 𝒁𝟐 = 𝟒𝟎∠𝟒𝟓∘ Ω. Calculate the Complex Power, total apparent, real, reactive powers
supplied by the source.
