Lesson 5. Diversity and Materials in the Environment: Metals and Nonmetals

So far, 118 elements have been discovered by scientists. Of these, 94 occur naturally on Earth
while 22 are produced artificially through nuclear processes.

The Periodic Table of Elements

A table shows the names and symbols of the chemical elements that are universally accepted. The table
classifies the elements into three general categories:

Metals
 Of the naturally occurring elements, 81 are metals.
 A metal is usually shiny and has a certain luster.
 Except for mercury, metals are solid at room temperature.
 They are good conductors of heat and electricity. They are also ductile and malleable.
 An element is said to be ductile when it can be drawn into thin wires and malleable when it can be
easily hammered into sheets.
 Luster, temperature, conductivity, ductility, and malleability are the main physical properties of
metals.
 A physical property is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the
identity or composition of the material.

Nonmetals
 In the periodic table, hydrogen and all the elements to the right are nonmetals.
 A nonmetal is usually a gas or a brittle solid without luster.
 Nonmetals do not exhibit the same physical properties of metals.
 They are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
 They are not ductile nor malleable.
 They are solids, liquids, or gases at room temperature.
 They are also transparent, like a sheet.
 Unlike metals, nonmetals are brittle and can be easily crushed.

Metalloids
 In the periodic table, all the elements to the right of the thick line are metalloids.
 A metalloid has properties that are intermediate between those of metals and nonmetals.
