Ethnolinguistic Groups in the Philippines

THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE


The Philippines is inhabited by more than 175 ethnolinguistic groups.
Gaddang or Ga’dang
- They are known to have inhabited the upper Cagayan Valley and in the areas of Ifugao
and Mountain Province.
Ibanag
- They are a predominantly Christian lowland ethnic group inhabited the provinces of
Cagayan and Isabela in the Cagayan Valley of northern Luzon.
Ivatan or Ibatan
- They are the predominant ethnolinguistic group in the Batanes islands of the Philippines.
Sambal
- The Sambals are the inhabitants of the province of Zambales and the independent city of
Olongapo.
Subanen
- “From the river”
- This ethnic group were the aborigines of western Mindanao particularly in Zamboanga
Peninsula
Igorots
- They live in the highlands of Luzon. They are primarily located in the Cordillera Ad.
Region.
Mangyan
- The Mangyan communities are found in Mindoro.
Negritos
- The Negrito are several ethnic groups of the Australoid race who inhabited the parts of
Southeast Asia.
