Never has tourists paid more attention to prioritizing culture and environmental protection in travel

destinations than it is today. Some argue that it is impossible for pristine and sustainable tourism. I
disagree with this view because of the profound impacts of revenue from tourism on preserving the
culture and environment in these places.

One justification for responsible tourism has to do with its contribution to preserving traditional
professions. Hardly anyone can deny that by using goods and services in travel destinations, tourists can
bring stable incomes to the locals and artisans, which can help them afford their lives with their
professions. As a result, they no longer need to change their jobs or migrate to big cities to find high-
paying jobs. That is not to mention, responsible tourists are more in favor of local products and services
which are tagged environmentally-friendly. Based on the supply-demand relationship, these choices can
gradually increase the number of green services and reduce the businesses that adopt anti-environment
practices. In turn, this will facilitate sustainable tourism.

Another practical argument in favor of preserving both culture and environment is the potential
advantage it can provide in the long run. Although some may argue that economic advantages can not
outweigh the disadvantages relating to the loss of cultural identity and pollution, the very fact that taxes
and revenue from tourism can go back to projects aiming at restoring the missing cultural features such
as religious festivals or traditional customs which interest a large number of tourists from different
places. A part of this taxes including VAT and green taxes is then used to protect the environment. In this
light, tourists have already paid for culture and environmental protection before they set their foot on
these sites.

In conclusion, the importance of protecting the culture and environment has become more urgent than
ever before. I firmly believe that tourists can preserve culture and environment in travel destinations
effectively both directly and indirectly.
