COOLFILL Bio Media (CD- BIO)

Biological treatment of wastewater has undergone a paradigm change with the advent of high efficiency plastic
media. Working on the principle of higher surface area within the given volume, plastic media such as COOLFill
Bio Media have resulted in highly efficient and compact treatment systems both aerobic and anaerobic. The
structured media aids uniform growth of biological film on media surface. Microorganism growth on the media
converts the dissolved organic waste into a 'removable' inorganic biomass.

COOLFill Bio Media is manufactured from rigid

non-flammable ultraviolet (UV) stabilized PVC
sheets. They are resistant to bacteria, acids, alkalies,
fungi and chemicals that are present in wastewater.
The modules (packs) have folded edges at the top
and bottom that provide critical strength at load
bearing areas thus giving resistance to mechanical
damage and erosion. COOLFill Bio Media provides a
consistent distribution of air and water throughout
the media, thereby enhancing contact between the
effluent and the biofilm air.

Manufactured by continuous forming under controlled environment the COOLFill sheets have uniform thickness.
The media is available in a number of different sizes and configurations, the choice of which depends upon a
number of factors including type of effluent, industry and treatment process.

Application areas for COOLFill Bio Media include

1. Tricking Filters / Bio Towers,
2. Submerged Activated Fixed Film Reactors (SAFF),
3. Anaerobic Digesters,
4. Rotating Biological Contactors (RBCs),
5. Nitrification-Denitrification and
6. Degasification.

The cross-fluted media product range combines high

specific surface area with a large number of mixing
points per unit volume to facilitate superior
performance over a wide range of hydraulic wetting
rates. In this structure each sheet in the module is
corrugated at 30 degrees from the vertical and the
assembly is formed in a cross-corrugated pattern.

This range of media provides the highest efficiency of BOD removal and wastewater redistribution and is the
media of choice for Trickling Filter or Bio Towers, SAFF, any Hybrid bioreactors as well as nitrification and
denitrification filters.

For higher BOD loads or in case of applications where the risk of clogging may be considered
high, COOLDECK recommends its Openflow media configuration. This configuration is built
up alternating cross fluted media with vertical fluted media thereby creating larger openings
for the bio film while yet maintaining a reasonable number of mixing points and surface in the
media structure.

An alternate Openflow structure involves installation of the media in a mixed configuration. Vertical flow media
installed at the bottom of the tank gives structural stability as well reduces the potential for plugging in the more
'active' bottom layers of the configuration. Cross fluted media installed in the top two layers promotes waste water
distribution and oxygen transfer for the aerobic process.

For high strength wastewater treatment, CDASPL manufactures

the vertical-fluted product range of Bio Media. The vertical fluted
Bio Media modules are a combination of vertical fluted sheets
and plain sheets assembled alternate to each other. The
resultant modules not only have high mechanical but also the
open structure results in the shearing away of excess solids
reducing the potential of clogging. The structure eliminates the
cross joining points where bio solids often accumulate thus
providing for the continuous availability of active biofilm area. CD-33:01
