when reciting the Qur’an
The Messenger of Allah H said: Verily the deeds are only
according to the intentions, and the person will only have
what he intended.
AL-BUKHARI 1

The companions and the firmly grounded scholars after them would
perform one action while having many intentions, such that they would
obtain a great reward for each intention.

We intend for the Quran to intercede
on our behalf.
The Prophet H said: Recite the Quran, for on the Day of
Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it.
ABU DAWŪD 1378

We intend to multiply our good deeds.
The Messenger H said: Whoever recites a letter from Allah's
Book, then he receives the reward from it and the reward of
ten the like of it.
TIRMIDHI 3158

We seek safety from the fire.
The Messenger H said: If he collected the Quran in his skin
Allah would not burn him with the fire.
AUTHENTICATED BY SHAYKH AL ALBANI (TRANSL ATOR’S NOTE: IMAM AHMAD SAID: THIS
IS HOPE FOR THE ONE WHO HAS THE QURAN IN HIS HEART THAT HE WILL NOT TOUCH THE
FIRE. AND WHAT IS MEANT BY ‘SKIN’ IS THE HEART OF THE PERSON.
AL-AADABUSH SHAR'IYYAH OF IBN MUFLIH 181/2)

We intend by its recitation, and working by it;
elevation in paradise.
The Messenger H said: It will be said to the companion of the
Quran: ‘Recite, and rise up, recite (melodiously) as you used to
recite in the world, for your level will be according
to the last verse that you recite.

We seek guidance.
Allah E said
ْ ّ َ
َ�‫اب اَل َر ْي َب ۛ ِف ِيه ۛ ُه ًدى ِل ُمْل َّت ِق ن‬
ُ ْ
َ‫َذلك الكت‬
َ ٰ
‫ي‬ ِ ِ
This is the book (the Qur'an), whereof there is no doubt,
a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqoon.
SURAH AL-BAQARAH V2

We seek to become from those
Allah has chosen.
The Prophet H said: Allah has His own people among
mankind. They said: O Messenger of Allah, who are they? He said:
They are the people of the Quran; they are the people of Allah
and those who are closest to Him.

We seek a cure for the hearts, the body; and the
mercy for which it was sent down.
Allah E said
َۙ �‫مْح ٌة ِّل ْ ُمْل ْؤ ِم ِن ن‬
َ ْ َ َ ٌ َ َ ُ َ ْ ُ ْ َ ُ ّ ‫ز‬
‫ون ِ�ل ِمن القر ِآن ما هو ِشفاء ور‬ َ ‫ن‬ ُ َ
‫ي‬
And we send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and a mercy to
those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism and act on it).
SURAH AL-ISRA V82

We seek to bring ease to our hearts.
Allah E said
ُ ُ ْ ْ َّ
ُ‫اهَّلل َتط َم ئ ِ نُّ� القلوب‬ ْ َ َ
ِ ‫أاَل ِب ِذك ِر‬
Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

We seek by it, a reason for life in our hearts,
light in our chest, and removal of
our sorrow and anxiety.
The Prophet H said in his supplication: That You make the
Quran the life of my heart, and light in my chest, and a departure for
my sorrow and a release for my anxiety.

We recite the Quran with the intention
of dying upon it.
Ibn Kathir V said: Whoever lives upon something, he will die upon it.
And whoever dies upon something he will be raised upon it. He based
this on the statement of Allah E:
َّ َ َ َّ ‫ن‬
َ�‫ات أن ج ْ� َعل ُه ْم اَكل ِذ ن‬ َ َ ّ ُ َ ‫ت‬ ْ َ َّ َ َ ْ َ
‫ي‬ َّ َ
ِ ‫أم ح ِسب ال ِذ ي� اج�حوا الس ِيئ‬‫ن‬
ُ ‫ت‬ َ َ
ُ ‫امُه ومَم‬
ْۚ ‫ا�م‬ َ ُ ْ َّ
ْ ‫ات سواء حَّم َي‬ ً َ َ َ َّ ُ َ َ ُ َ
ِ ‫آمنوا و ِمَعلوا الص ِاحِل‬
َ ُُ َْ َ َ َ
‫ساء ما ي�مُكون‬
Or do those who earn evil deeds think that We shall hold them
equal with those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah — Islamic
Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, in their present life and
after their death? Worst is the judgement that they make.
SURAH AL-JATHIYAH V21

We seek by its recitation to increase
our Iman ( faith).
This is based upon the statement of Allah E
ٰ ْ ُْ ُّ
ًۚ �‫مُك َز َادت ُه َهذه إ َ� نا‬ َ ُ ُ َ َّ ْ َ ‫ف‬ ٌ ُ ْ َ ُ َ َ َ
‫ِ ِ ِي‬ ُ ‫ن‬ َ
‫و ِإذا ما أ ِ�لت سورة ِ��م من يقول أي‬ ‫ز‬ ‫ن‬
َ ُ ‫َ َ َّ َّ نَ َ ُ َ َ َ تْ ُ ْ َ نً َ ُ ْ َ ْ َ ْ ش‬
‫فأما ال ِذ ي� آمنوا فزاد�م ِإ ي�ا� ومُه يستب ِ�ون‬
And whenever there comes down a Surah (chapter from
the Qur'an), some of them (hypocrites) say: Which of
you has had his Faith increased by it? As of those who
believe, it has increased their Faith, and they rejoice.
SURAH AT-TAUBAH V124

We seek by its recitation to increase
our knowledge of our Lord,
and awareness of Him
So we can increase our humility before Him, understand our
need for Him, and thus seek His help at every instance.

We intend to worship Allah by our
recitation of the Qur’an.
As Allah E stated
ً ْ َ‫َ َ ّ ْ ُ ْ َ ت‬
‫ورِت ِل القرآن � ِتياًل‬
And recite the Qur’an (aloud) in a slow,
(pleasant tone and) style

tremendous speech.
As it comes in the Hadith:
Verily you will be with those you love.
