Length conversion: 1 cm = 10 mm
Area conversion: 1 cm2 = 102 mm2

8 cm2 = 8 x 102 mm2 = 800 mm2

Chai has considered the length conversion (cm) rather than the area conversion (cm2)
The correct answer should be 800 mm2 [1]

i)
Change 20 minutes into seconds (by multiplying by 60)

20 60 = 1200

75 000 litres of water flows out every 1 second

Find the amount of water flowing out over 1200 seconds (by multiplying 75 000 by 1200)

75 000 1200 = 90 000 000 litres

Write 90 000 000 litres in millions

90 million litres [1]

ii)
The volume of water that leaves the lake, V, formed a prism of height h m and cross-
sectional area A m2

V = 90 000 000 litres from part (a)(i)

Change V into m3 (by dividing by 1000)

V = 90 000 m3

A = 55 hectares
Change A into m2 (by multiplying by 104 = 10 000)
A = 55 10 000 = 550 000 m2

The volume of a prism is V = A h

Make h the subject of the formula (by dividing both sides by A)

Substitute V = 90 000 and A = 550 000 into the formula

metres

the figures 164 or 1636 seen [1]

0.164 or 0.1636... [1]

Give h in cm (by multiplying by 100)

16.4 cm [1]

3
Count the edges.
There are 12 edges, which are equal in length

Some multiples of 18 are divisible by 12; for example, 36, 72, 108, ... . In these cases, x would
be a whole number.
And some multiples of 18 are not divisible by 12; 18, 54, 90, ... . In these cases, x would not be
a whole number.

The third option is correct, might be a whole number [1]

4
The sides of the cross-section become edges at both ends of the prism.

For example, consider a triangle-based prism (n = 3):

So far we have 2n, shown by the solid lines.

Now consider the edges joining the cross-sectional faces:

We have another n edges, again shown by the solid lines.

2n + n = 3n

The second option is correct, [1]

5
First find the length of the side in metres by taking the positive square root of the area.

1 m = 100 cm. Convert the into centimetres by multiplying by 100.

0.5 × 100 = 50

50 cm [1]
6
1 cm = 10 mm. Therefore 1 cm3 = 103 mm3. To convert from cm3 to mm3 you need to multiply by
103.
15 000 mm3 [1]
