ELECTROLYTES, INFECTIOUS,
INFLAMMATORY, AND IMMUNOLOGIC,
CELLULAR ABERRATIONS, ACUTE AND
CHRONIC
Learning Content:

1. Patient Transfer

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the lecture discussion, the students are expected to:

1. Demonstrate proper body mechanics when assisting a patient with mobility and transfer.
2. Identify and assess the patient's physical and cognitive abilities and limitations before initiating a
transfer.
3. Safely transfer patients from one surface to another while maintaining their comfort and dignity.
4. Select and utilize appropriate transfer aids and equipment based on the patient's needs.
5. Communicate effectively with the patient, ensuring they understand the transfer process and feel
involved in their care.
6. Collaborate with a team of healthcare providers to execute safe and coordinated patient transfers.
7. Recognize and respond to potential complications or hazards during transfers, such as falls or skin
shear.
8. Maintain infection control practices during transfers, including hand hygiene and equipment
sanitation.
9. Document patient transfers accurately, including the patient's response and any issues encountered
during the process.
10. Apply principles of patient privacy and confidentiality during transfers and interactions with patients.
11. Adapt transfer techniques for patients with special needs or conditions, such as bariatric patients,
pediatric patients, or those with mobility aids.
12. Evaluate the effectiveness of patient transfers by monitoring patient comfort and safety, and adjusting
techniques as needed for continuous improvement.

Methodology:
1. Lecture demonstration
 begin with a brief lecture that outlines the key concepts and principles of patient transfers. This
could include topics such as the importance of safe transfers, understanding patient needs, and
the use of proper body mechanics.
2. Video Analysis
 show video demonstrations of both correct and incorrect patient transfers. Ask students to
analyze the videos and identify best practices and areas for improvement. This visual approach
can enhance their observational skills.
3. Demonstration
 transition into a practical demonstration where the instructor or a skilled practitioner physically
demonstrates the correct techniques for patient transfers. This should include proper equipment
usage, body positioning, and communication with the patient.
4. Simulation
 use of patient transfer simulations and role-playing scenarios can help students develop their
transfer skills in a controlled environment. Simulated scenarios can mimic various patient
conditions and transfer challenges, allowing students to practice decision-making and
communication skills.
5. Group Discussions
 facilitate group discussions where students can share their experiences, insights, and challenges
related to patient transfers. This allows them to learn from each other's experiences and engage in
peer-to-peer learning.
6. Feedback and Correction
 during the practice session, instructors can provide feedback and correct any improper techniques
or mistakes. This ensures that students are using safe and effective transfer methods.
