The Story of The Last Supper

Resource Box:
• Purple fabric square (approximately 50cm x 50cm)
• Image of Jesus
• Images of the disciples
• Image of bread (or real bread) cut down the middle
• Image of wine (or real juice)
NB: Wooden peg figures may be used as substitutes to the images

Seat the students in a semi-circle ready to listen to the story. When the students are settled go
to the shelf and carry the box of materials as you would the Bible.
Place the box beside you and then place the class Bible in front of you, slightly to the side.

Place your hand on the Bible.

I am going to tell you a story that comes from this special book, the Bible. In the Bible, we
read about how Jesus gave the Eucharist to the first members of God’s family during the last
meal he had with his followers. This meal is called the Last Supper.

Spread the piece of fabric onto the floor.

The story of the Last Supper is set during the Passover. At Passover, Jewish families eat a meal
and recall their story as a people of God.

Open the box and place the picture of Jesus onto the fabric.
Jesus had gathered with his friends to eat the Passover meal.
Place the pictures of the disciples with Jesus into a circle.
But something special happened at this meal. Something that was different.

Place the image of the bread and wine into the centre of the circle.
While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread,
Place the bread in front of Jesus as one whole piece of bread.
and after blessing it he broke it,
Raise hand above the bread as though you are blessing the bread, and then split it in two.
Gave it to his disciples and said, “Take, this is my body.”
Move the bread around the circle of disciples.

Pause to allow time for the students to reflect. Move the image of the bread back to the centre
of the circle.

Place the image of the wine in front of Jesus.

Then he took a cup and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it.
Move the image of the wine around the circle of disciples.
He said, “Take, this is my blood.”
Hold the image of wine in two cupped hands and slowly move your hands around to show the
students.

This is the story of the Last Supper.
