Abstract

Title: Single shift schedule as Perceived by Lucena City National High

School Grade 10 Students

Adviser: Mark Angelo Abadilla

The study entitled "Single shift schedule as Perceived by Lucena City

National High School Grade 10 Students" A single shift class schedule in the
school is one of those scheduling, where a group of students share an entire
room and take classes according to their schedules. In any educational
institution, the scheduling of school plays an important role.

Descriptive method of research and structured type of questionnaire were

used. Respondents of the study were students of Grade 10 students of Lucena
City National High School. Descriptive rating, weighted mean method were used
in the analysis of data and presented in figures and tables. Based on the
findings, the Lucena City National High School students were mostly ranging
from 15-16 years old. The researchers reviewed, tailed, analyzed, and
interpreted the data from the questionnaire. The study was conducted during
school year 2023 within Lucena City.

Based on the conclusions, the researchers find out that the

implementation of Single Shift Schedule in Lucena City National High School is
deemed successful in achieving its goals and positively impacting the students'
academic and personal development. Also, the respondents agree that the
schedule does not pose any negative impact on their academic performance
health and social activities. Lastly, the single shift schedule is a beneficial
approach for young students as it provides them with enough time to handle
academic responsibilities other school-related activities and personal time.
CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT’S SETTING

INTRODUCTION

A single shift class in the school is one of those scheduling, where a group
of students share an entire room and take classes according to their schedules.
In any educational institution, the scheduling of schools plays an important role. A
schedule establishes a framework for the student and ensures that teaching staff
are available. The district and school levels need to be taken into account when
scheduling. The educational goals of the schools have a significant impact on
student enrolments, course requests, school staffing and curriculum changes.
The “Single-Shift” program at schools extends the time students spend in
municipal schools and seeks to improve the quality of education provision by
creating a diverse curriculum for the use of the extra time in school, school day is
divided in two shifts of 6 to 6 hours each. The first group of students is for
morning classes while the second group of students is for the afternoon classes

On the report of Parajas (2019), this type of school system is to prevent

the overflowing of students inside the school due to the lack of classrooms.
Some schools from Manila, The Makati government is upgrading the city's public
schools to achieve the goal of creating single shift classes for students.
According to Makati Mayor Abigail Binay said in an interview over ANC that they
already have a plan to build more schools in the coming years as Makati aims to
make a single shift in their classes.

Conforming to, Quismorio (2013), it was introduced by Rufus Rodriguez of

the 2nd district of Cagayan de Oro to cut the eight-hour teaching day of public
school teachers to just six hours because it can cause burnout. To make it easier
for teachers to create lesson plans and instructional materials, connect with
learners during extracurricular activities, and perform additional duties that the
administrator or superior may designate, the Mindanaoan utilized the
requirement that teachers class hours be adjusted as a result of his observation
that the class schedule is crucial to their performance in school. A regular
timetable can also aid in time management, lessen stress, and ease anxiety for
both teachers and pupils. Like every other employee, teachers work a standard
eight-hour schedule. The lecture hall may be used for six hours of that shift, and
the remaining two hours are dedicated to lesson planning, lecture preparation,
and parent and student discussions.

The purpose of this study is to compare the academic performance of

students working in one and two shifts and to find out their understanding of the
single shift work. To avert classroom shortage and accommodate all the
enrollees the school decided to implement class shifting, thus the researchers
studied the effects of class shifting to the academic performance of each learner
in all levels of education. In this study, the researchers also witnessed the
different strategies, preparation of instructional materials, and teaching styles that
are suited to the learners and well-established leadership in the implementation
of the shifting of classes.

Background of the Study

In the Philippines, the school year begins in the first week of June and
ends in April. The Department of Education school calendar for school year
2022-2023 shall formally open on August 22,2022 and shall ends on July 7,2023.
Due to a lack of classrooms, facilities, and teachers, there was a double shifting
schedule where students have a schedule that comes in the morning and
afternoon.

As stated by Akala (2013), everyone needs to learn because it helps them

gain respect and recognition, at the same time an essential component of their
lives both individually and collectively. Although the importance of education in
our society is it could not be imagined without it, unequal teaching standards
remain a major problem with which we need to address.

In order to deal with the issue of overpopulation in our system, while also
taking into account the lack of available educational material like laboratories and
classrooms, a shift program has been put in place. A single shift system of
schooling is a type of educational system that only educates students in the
morning, whereas a multiple shift system of schooling educates students in two
different age groups at various sessions or times.

Based on World Bank policy research working paper (2017), single shift
refers a school schedule where the classes divided in to two, the first shift in the
morning is 6:30 to 12:15 and the afternoon shift start in 12:15 to 5:30 in the
afternoon. Single shift encourage us to have more time for extracurricular
activities, homework, and self-study, furthermore it increase some transportation
issues and as well as this get rid of the need for students to travel to and from
school multiple times a day, as it may be time-consuming and tiring.

It is however, single shift schedules or classes are the best and most
convenient times for students. Because they can concentrate more on their
schoolwork. Single shift is important to all students they are not used to it the
double shift and educate the students about it being a viable solution to
classroom shortage. Though, there is still an issue that implementing a single
shift schedule is difficult. There are deficiencies that must be addressed before it
can be implemented in all schools. It also has the limitation of only being
implemented in a few schools where there are enough classrooms and facilities
for its students.

Based from the concept given above, the researchers decided to conduct a
study on the perception of grade 10 students in single shift schedule.

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the demographic profile of LCNHS G10 Students in terms of:

a. Age
b. Sex
c. Section
2. What is the perception of LCNHS G10 students on the Single Shift
Schedule?
3. What are the common problems raised by the implementation of the
Single Shift Schedule?

Significance of the Study

This study would be significance to the following:

To the Students

Students may learn from this study what the significance of a good class
schedule is and how it contributes to their performance in school.

To the teachers

Teachers might have understood more about the benefits and

complications of the new kind of class schedule with the help of this study.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter features the review related literature and studies presented
came from a mix of foreign and local sources. This aims to add information
pertaining to the researchers chosen topic. All information provided in this
chapter have been deemed important by the researchers to their study.

Related Literature

It cannot be disputed that the needs of all teachers, students,

administrator and other who can benefits from the Single-shift schedule are
increasing. The clearest example of this is whether it is International or Local, this
is the main problem of country.

Based on Mateo (2022), the spokesman depEd Michael Poa says that
there are many ways of strategies to accommodate the lack of classrooms and to
divide and maintain the shifting schedule and blended learning. There will be a
double shift policy, morning and afternoon sessions. According to the depEd
spokesman "We are considering shifting we will have shifts like what we use to
do. Some go to class in the morning, then the other learners will come in the
afternoon". The statement said by the depEd spokesman due to a lack of
classroom space and a large number of pupils, there will be two shifts.
As explained by Cruz (2017), Turno Nico's educational concept, which he
dubbed "Single-Shift" schools, children' school days are extended and an
adaptable curriculum is developed to make the most of the extra time. Some
Single-shift schools could only receive certification if, among other requirements,
the entire teaching staff gave their complete attention to just one institution. The
recognized one-shift program in high schools has large and robust positive
impacts, according to estimates of differences that take into account school and
time fixed effects as well as restrictive school-specific restrictions. The findings
demonstrate that just extending the school day does not improve student
performance unless it is done in conjunction with a more broad and through
usage and organization of additional school hours, which calls for a well-
structured and integrated curriculum, teachers, and other educational personnel.

A supportive learning environment must be offered to pupils because high

school is a crucial stage in young people's development. The school timetable is
one element that affects high school student’s achievement. There are many high
schools that use the conventional Single-shift schedule. However, it has been
discovered that this schedule has a number of drawbacks that could harm
students academic performance. The purpose of this study of the research is to
investigate the drawbacks of the Single-shift schedule in high school and how it
affects pupils.

As stated by Newman (2020), most Filipino children aged 15–16 are high
school students. Most of them are located in or near cities. It was not until
recently that the Filipinos not graduated from high school on time because of the
aggravated deficiency in learning, so most of the students at that time were old in
high school. But in the figure above with the highest percentage, more young
people are the right age for high school.

From the point of view of Berg (2019) In most schools, the average for
girls is greater than that of boys. Filipino girls are mostly enrolled, especially in
public schools. More generally speaking, there is no reason to expect a perfect
gender balance in high school. Functional literacy rates are higher among female
adolescents compared to their male counterparts.

Pursuant to Seidman (2019), students have a difficult time finding out what
it is that they do not know, even after several hours of study. They find it difficult
to concentrate during study time; it is more difficult to focus on what is being
studied, and it is also difficult to organize what a student should do. Also because
of the school schedule, which sometimes changes due to the school problems
contained in it. This researcher also proved that most students are not able to
manage their time.

According to a study by Joo and Lee (2019), students possibilities to

develop abilities outside of the classroom are constrained by the Single-shift
schedule's rigidity. The social and emotional development of students may suffer
as a result of this lack of possibilities. The single shift plan, which compels pupils
to be in class all day, is a strict and unyielding timetable. There are few options
for students to work a part-time job, participate in extracurricular activities, or
complete an internship with this timetable.

As mentioned by Wilson and Tracy (2020), burnout and mental fatigue

may also be brought on by the single-shift schedule. Students who spend a lot of
time in class become mentally worn out and are more likely to experience
burnout. As a result, students academic progress and motivation to learn could
decrease.

As indicated in the study by Altenburg and Associates(2018), the kids

physical health may also suffer as a result of the Single-shift plan. Pupils who
spend a lot of time in class are more likely to struggle with physical ailments like
obesity, poor posture, and eye strain. The student’s general well-being and
happiness may deteriorate as a result.

The typical single shift schedule, which is common in high schools, has a
variety of problems that could harm students academic performance, social and
emotional development, mental health, and physical health. High schools should
take into account alternative timetables that provide students more freedom, the
chance to develop their skills outside of the classroom, and support their overall
health and wellness.

The benefits of a single-shift class schedule, according to Zhang and Wu

(2019), they discovered that switching from a multi-shift to a single-shift timetable
one of example is it can increased the learning environment and academic
achievement of elementary school pupils. Additionally, it can be a more effective
use of resources because schools can utilize their spaces continuously
throughout the day without any downtime in between shifts. This makes it simpler
to utilize classroom resources to their fullest potential and can improve student
attendance by increasing the probability that students will participate in class on
schedule.

In the same article, Zhang and Wu added is you can spent time with your
family. Single-shift schedules allow kids to spend less time in school for extended
lengths of time, allowing them to spend more time with their families and engage
in extracurricular activities. Additionally, parents are free to participate in family
dinners, help with homework, go to school events, and engage in other family-
friendly activities. This improves relationships within the family and fosters
actions that are beneficial to the mental health of both parents and children.
Improved academic performance with a single shift schedule, students may have
greater concentration and energy for their studies, which could result in improved
academic performance.

From the point of view of Stromberg (2017), single shift schedule has
many benefits for young students such as they have more time to study, do other
things related to school and time for themselves and their families.

Additionally, Students can also develop a pattern and good study habits
with a consistent timetable. This may lead to greater time management skills,
and more dependable scheduling facilitates better task organization and
planning. Knowing when specific assignments or study sessions are due helps
students organize their studies. Less stress and anxiety: students who follow a
set schedule can better manage their time since they know what to expect.
Because they don't have to worry about how they will perform on tasks like
assignments and other activities, this can result in less stress and anxiety.
Students with good time management skills are more likely to succeed
academically. They can make sure they have enough time by organizing their
schedules.

Furthermore, said It is simpler for pupils to arrange their days and stay on
task when schedules are consistent. They can more effectively manage their
study time, extracurricular activities, and downtime, which will help teachers plan
their classes and activities. A Single-shift schedule makes it more probable for
both students and teachers to establish a routine, which can aid in the formation
of positive habits and boost productivity. their ability to plan their social and
academic responsibilities around their school schedule without worrying about
unforeseen changes or disruptions. This also holds true for instructors who can
more efficiently schedule their courses and grading periods. Additionally,
maintaining consistent schedules can assist students in continuing healthy
routines like getting enough sleep, eating wholesome meals, and exercising
frequently. Single-shift schedules provide a more consistent and predictable
ambiance, which can be advantageous for both children and teachers.

In conclusion, the main purpose of Single-shift schedule in order to

promote "Education for all" the Single-shift program was initiated in public
schools. Under the Single-shift schedule, students attend school for eight hours
per day.

RELATED STUDIES

According to Andre Loureiro (2022), When it covered aspects like the full
dedication of all teaching staff to one school, a subset of single shift schools was
certified. Difference-in-differences estimates, including school and time fixed
effects, as well as restrictive school-by-time controls, indicate sizable and robust
positive results for the certified Single-Shift program in middle schools. The
results showed that merely extending the school day had no positive impact on
student performance, if it was not accompanied by a more complete and
thoughtful consideration of how additional learning time is used and organized,
which required an interdisciplinary curriculum, teachers with full dedication to one
school as well as targeted training. His study shows that there was significant
correlation between single shift schedule as well as the beneficiaries academic
performances.

Another example of study by Bray, have shown the purpose of single

shifting schedule where the data from these studies are analyzed, and it does
become clear that the purpose of single shifting schedule is to come up with a
adequate school places and minimize the value of demonstrate another building
for the reason that with this system, it acknowledge a single set of buildings and
facilities to distribute more pupils. His study have shown that in order to promote
education for all, but the implementation of single-shift class schedule may have
summons to students because children authorized study fewer hours. However,
adverse externalities with regard to educational attainment between students
who attend different classes or periods may exist despite the benefits of a single
shift education system. The findings show that the extra workload of teachers
has a negative impact on the performance of students during the morning shift
and afternoon shift, and there is statistically significant evidence that students
study is beneficial during the morning shift. The difference in the characteristics
of students is mostly responsible for the impact of morning shift on academic
attainment. The studies have shown that the performance of students at school
can be affected by a single shift system. In addition, the parents incapable
guarantee the safety of his/her child therefore students in the afternoon shift
wouldn't leave school until 6:00 pm. Their parents abstain the assurance that
their child disinclined accident after varnish their classes and do things that must
put them in danger, saying that this system is not safe at all.
It is very important to know and understand every effects that the single
shifting classes have for it's beneficiaries. It's influence it's beneficiaries in many
different ways that it will help, like it was aligned to it's needed. The academic
value that the single shifting program have, affect the success of the program
itself. When the effect was shown and the beneficiaries have shown the success
on the academic and behavior in coping with what's happening in every daily life.

Hypothesis

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discussed the methods and procedures that the researcher
applied in conducting the study. It presents the research design, population,
sampling procedure, Instrumentation, data gathering procedures, statistical
treatment.

Research Design

This study employed the descriptive research design. The researcher

determined the perception of single shift schedule on Grade 10 Students in
Lucena City National Highschool by administering questionnaire to elicit
responses. A survey questionnaire was made to determine the perception of
single shift on students.
Population

The population of grade 10 students in LCNHS has a total of 833. To get

the respondents, the researchers used Slovin's formula. The respondents of the
study are grade 10 students (15) per section and for a total of 240 students.

Sampling Procedure

The researchers utilize probability. The aim of sampling is to obtain a

representative sample of the student population at Lucena City National High
School. As a result, the researchers calculated the total number of samples for
this study using Slovin's sampling method.

SLOVIN’S FORMULA:

N
n=
1+ Ne 2

Where:

n is the sample size

N is the population size

e is the margin of error to be detected by the researchers

Instrumentation

A survey-style questionnaire will be used in the study to ascertain the

insights of grade 10 students at Lucena City National High School. The
questionnaire is a list of questions that have been carefully prepared for answers
by grade 10 students and is intended to gather data and facts. Their perceptions
on single shift schedules are asked for in the first part of the questionnaire.

Data Gathering Procedures

Necessary permits to conduct the research were first secured. A letter for
the approval was sought from the office of Principal of the Lucena City National
High School to allow the Researcher to conduct the Research. After giving the
letter of consent, the administration of the survey questionnaire was conducted.
Results were tabulated, subjected to statistical treatment and interpreted.
Statistical treatment was employed to find the correlation between the variables.

Statistical Treatment

To determine the perception of grade 10 Students in single shift
