Abstract
INTRODUCTION
A single shift class in the school is one of those scheduling, where a group
of students share an entire room and take classes according to their schedules.
In any educational institution, the scheduling of schools plays an important role. A
schedule establishes a framework for the student and ensures that teaching staff
are available. The district and school levels need to be taken into account when
scheduling. The educational goals of the schools have a significant impact on
student enrolments, course requests, school staffing and curriculum changes.
The “Single-Shift” program at schools extends the time students spend in
municipal schools and seeks to improve the quality of education provision by
creating a diverse curriculum for the use of the extra time in school, school day is
divided in two shifts of 6 to 6 hours each. The first group of students is for
morning classes while the second group of students is for the afternoon classes
In the Philippines, the school year begins in the first week of June and
ends in April. The Department of Education school calendar for school year
2022-2023 shall formally open on August 22,2022 and shall ends on July 7,2023.
Due to a lack of classrooms, facilities, and teachers, there was a double shifting
schedule where students have a schedule that comes in the morning and
afternoon.
In order to deal with the issue of overpopulation in our system, while also
taking into account the lack of available educational material like laboratories and
classrooms, a shift program has been put in place. A single shift system of
schooling is a type of educational system that only educates students in the
morning, whereas a multiple shift system of schooling educates students in two
different age groups at various sessions or times.
Based on World Bank policy research working paper (2017), single shift
refers a school schedule where the classes divided in to two, the first shift in the
morning is 6:30 to 12:15 and the afternoon shift start in 12:15 to 5:30 in the
afternoon. Single shift encourage us to have more time for extracurricular
activities, homework, and self-study, furthermore it increase some transportation
issues and as well as this get rid of the need for students to travel to and from
school multiple times a day, as it may be time-consuming and tiring.
It is however, single shift schedules or classes are the best and most
convenient times for students. Because they can concentrate more on their
schoolwork. Single shift is important to all students they are not used to it the
double shift and educate the students about it being a viable solution to
classroom shortage. Though, there is still an issue that implementing a single
shift schedule is difficult. There are deficiencies that must be addressed before it
can be implemented in all schools. It also has the limitation of only being
implemented in a few schools where there are enough classrooms and facilities
for its students.
Based from the concept given above, the researchers decided to conduct a
study on the perception of grade 10 students in single shift schedule.

Perception
Sporadically we perceive things by way of using our senses of sight, hearing, and
smell or we can use our mind to comprehended things, in other words that we
are able to recognize or understand the way of things, like you noticed someone
that you know so as to a distance.
School
This exemplifies the house learning where students and teachers pursuing
knowledge together.
Single-Shift class
Designates to one set of learners per classroom for the whole day.

This chapter features the review related literature and studies presented
came from a mix of foreign and local sources. This aims to add information
pertaining to the researchers chosen topic. All information provided in this
chapter have been deemed important by the researchers to their study.

Based on Mateo (2022), the spokesman depEd Michael Poa says that
there are many ways of strategies to accommodate the lack of classrooms and to
divide and maintain the shifting schedule and blended learning. There will be a
double shift policy, morning and afternoon sessions. According to the depEd
spokesman "We are considering shifting we will have shifts like what we use to
do. Some go to class in the morning, then the other learners will come in the
afternoon". The statement said by the depEd spokesman due to a lack of
classroom space and a large number of pupils, there will be two shifts.
As explained by Cruz (2017), Turno Nico's educational concept, which he
dubbed "Single-Shift" schools, children' school days are extended and an
adaptable curriculum is developed to make the most of the extra time. Some
Single-shift schools could only receive certification if, among other requirements,
the entire teaching staff gave their complete attention to just one institution. The
recognized one-shift program in high schools has large and robust positive
impacts, according to estimates of differences that take into account school and
time fixed effects as well as restrictive school-specific restrictions. The findings
demonstrate that just extending the school day does not improve student
performance unless it is done in conjunction with a more broad and through
usage and organization of additional school hours, which calls for a well-
structured and integrated curriculum, teachers, and other educational personnel.
As stated by Newman (2020), most Filipino children aged 15–16 are high
school students. Most of them are located in or near cities. It was not until
recently that the Filipinos not graduated from high school on time because of the
aggravated deficiency in learning, so most of the students at that time were old in
high school. But in the figure above with the highest percentage, more young
people are the right age for high school.
From the point of view of Berg (2019) In most schools, the average for
girls is greater than that of boys. Filipino girls are mostly enrolled, especially in
public schools. More generally speaking, there is no reason to expect a perfect
gender balance in high school. Functional literacy rates are higher among female
adolescents compared to their male counterparts.
Pursuant to Seidman (2019), students have a difficult time finding out what
it is that they do not know, even after several hours of study. They find it difficult
to concentrate during study time; it is more difficult to focus on what is being
studied, and it is also difficult to organize what a student should do. Also because
of the school schedule, which sometimes changes due to the school problems
contained in it. This researcher also proved that most students are not able to
manage their time.
The typical single shift schedule, which is common in high schools, has a
variety of problems that could harm students academic performance, social and
emotional development, mental health, and physical health. High schools should
take into account alternative timetables that provide students more freedom, the
chance to develop their skills outside of the classroom, and support their overall
health and wellness.
In the same article, Zhang and Wu added is you can spent time with your
family. Single-shift schedules allow kids to spend less time in school for extended
lengths of time, allowing them to spend more time with their families and engage
in extracurricular activities. Additionally, parents are free to participate in family
dinners, help with homework, go to school events, and engage in other family-
friendly activities. This improves relationships within the family and fosters
actions that are beneficial to the mental health of both parents and children.
Improved academic performance with a single shift schedule, students may have
greater concentration and energy for their studies, which could result in improved
academic performance.
From the point of view of Stromberg (2017), single shift schedule has
many benefits for young students such as they have more time to study, do other
things related to school and time for themselves and their families.
Additionally, Students can also develop a pattern and good study habits
with a consistent timetable. This may lead to greater time management skills,
and more dependable scheduling facilitates better task organization and
planning. Knowing when specific assignments or study sessions are due helps
students organize their studies. Less stress and anxiety: students who follow a
set schedule can better manage their time since they know what to expect.
Because they don't have to worry about how they will perform on tasks like
assignments and other activities, this can result in less stress and anxiety.
Students with good time management skills are more likely to succeed
academically. They can make sure they have enough time by organizing their
schedules.
Furthermore, said It is simpler for pupils to arrange their days and stay on
task when schedules are consistent. They can more effectively manage their
study time, extracurricular activities, and downtime, which will help teachers plan
their classes and activities. A Single-shift schedule makes it more probable for
both students and teachers to establish a routine, which can aid in the formation
of positive habits and boost productivity. their ability to plan their social and
academic responsibilities around their school schedule without worrying about
unforeseen changes or disruptions. This also holds true for instructors who can
more efficiently schedule their courses and grading periods. Additionally,
maintaining consistent schedules can assist students in continuing healthy
routines like getting enough sleep, eating wholesome meals, and exercising
frequently. Single-shift schedules provide a more consistent and predictable
ambiance, which can be advantageous for both children and teachers.
RELATED STUDIES
According to Andre Loureiro (2022), When it covered aspects like the full
dedication of all teaching staff to one school, a subset of single shift schools was
certified. Difference-in-differences estimates, including school and time fixed
effects, as well as restrictive school-by-time controls, indicate sizable and robust
positive results for the certified Single-Shift program in middle schools. The
results showed that merely extending the school day had no positive impact on
student performance, if it was not accompanied by a more complete and
thoughtful consideration of how additional learning time is used and organized,
which required an interdisciplinary curriculum, teachers with full dedication to one
school as well as targeted training. His study shows that there was significant
correlation between single shift schedule as well as the beneficiaries academic
performances.
