FLOOR
In this tutorial, you will learn,
•To add a structural floor slab
•To create a new floor type with
required thickness
•To Copy and Paste Align
FLOOR- EXERCISE
1.Open the tutorial file
‘TutorialFloors_Input_LearningRevitOnline.rvt’ in Revit.
This project file already contains walls on Ground level.
2.As we want to create a floor under the Ground level,
navigate to the floor plan of “00 Ground Level”.
3.As this would be a structural floor/slab, we will use
Structural Floor tool.
4.To create non-structural floors, use Architectural floors
(Architecture tab -> Build panel -> Floor drop-down -
>Floor: Structural)
5. Revit will enter into a Sketch mode. The tab
‘Modify|Create Floor Boundary’ will become active.
6.Select the type of floor you would like to create from
the Type Selector. For this tutorial, select ‘Generic
150mm’.
FLOOR- EXERCISE
7. To manually sketch the boundary, you can use the
drawing tools available in the Draw panel. But, as the
walls are already available in the layout which define the
floor boundary, we will use “Pick Walls” tool.
8.Pick walls that define the boundary of the floor in the
drawing area as shown below.
 TIP: As you pick walls, the flip arrows will appear on the
line. Use this flip arrow to flip the line between the inner
and outer boundary of the wall.
9.In a sketch mode, no lines can overlap or intersect each
other. Use modify tools such as Trim/Extend to make a
closed loop as shown below.
10.After drawing the boundary, click Finish Edit Mode to end
the Sketch mode.
11.Revit may give you a notification whether you would like
to attach the highlighted walls to the floor. For now, select
No.
12.Go to a Section view to see the Floor. Notice that the top
of the floor is aligned with the ’00 Ground Level’.
FLOOR TYPE - EXERCISE
1. Select the floor you would like to change the type for.
2. For this tutorial, select the type “Generic 150mm”.
3. Go to the Properties palette -> Edit Type -> Duplicate -> Rename the
new type of floor (for example, ‘100mm Concrete Slab’) . Say OK
after naming the type.
4. Under Type parameters -> Go to Construction parameter group ->
Structure Parameter -> Click Edit.
5. Edit Assembly dialog box will appear.
6. Add the values for thickness as 100mm /0.1m
7. Click to change the value of the material. To open the material browser,
click on the “…” sign in the cell.
8. Select Concrete as the material for this layer. Click OK to the material
browser.
9. Click OK to the Edit Assembly dialog box. Click OK to the Type
properties.
10. The selected floor has now changed from ‘Generic 150mm’ type to
‘100mm Concrete Slab’ type of floor. The thickness and the material
both have been changed for this floor.
PASTE ALIGN - EXERCISE
1. Select the floor of Ground Level that you
just created. (It is easy to select the view
from an elevation view/section view.)
2. Using ‘Ctrl+C’, copy the element on
clipboard.
3. Go to Modify tab -> Clipboard panel ->
Paste Drop down -> Aligned to Selected
Levels
4. Select the First Floor level.
 To select multiple levels, Press Ctrl to add to the
selection, Press Shift to remove from the selection.

5. Say OK to Select Levels dialog box.

6. Element will be copied on the selected
levels.
COLUMNS - BEAMS
In this tutorial, you will learn,
• To add structural columns
• To customize column sizes
•To add structural beams
•Create a beam system
COLUMNS AT GRID - EXERCISE

1. Open “TutorialColumns_Input_LearningRevitOnline.rvt” and navigate to Level 1 floor plan view.

2. Insert tab -> Load from library panel -> Load Family -> Load the Column Family: “Concrete-
Rectangular-Column.rfa”
3. Go to Architecture tab -> Build Panel -> Column drop down menu -> structural column (“CL” as
keyboard shortcut)
4. Modify|Structural Column tab is active -> Go to Placement panel -> select vertical column.
5. On the options bar, select Height as level 2.
6. Go to Multiple panel -> select At Grids option
COLUMNS AT GRID - EXERCISE
7. From the type selector, select Concrete-
rectangular-column 12x18 type.
8. Using your mouse, cross select Grids A-B from
right to left so that it includes Grids 1-2-3 in the
selection – as shown in the image above.
9. From multiple panel – click Finish to add column
on Grid A-B and Grid 1-2-3.
10. Press Esc to end the Column tool.
11. 6 instances of the 12x18 type column have been
modeled.
COLUMN TYPE - EXERCISE
1. Go to Architecture tab -> Build Panel -> Column drop
down menu -> structural column (“CL” as keyboard
shortcut)
2. From the type selector, select Concrete-rectangular-
column 12x18 type.
3. Go to edit type to open type properties dialog box ->
Duplicate -> Give a new name to the type as “12x14” -
> Say OK.
4. Change the value of “h” parameter as 14”.
 You can type in imperial units even when the project is in metric
units. Revit will convert the units automatically.

5. Say OK to close the type properties dialog box.

COLUMN TYPE - EXERCISE
The column tool is still active. We want to place columns at C-2 and C-3 grids as
shown in the image below.
6. Take your mouse towards the Grid C-2. Press Spacebar to change the orientation
of the column. When the orientation of the column is as shown in the image, click
on the grid intersection. The column 12x14 will be placed.
7. Repeat the step above to place the column on C-3 Grid.
BEAMS - EXERCISE
1. Open “TutorialBeams_Input_LearningRevitOnline.rvt”

2. Load Beam Family into the project: “Concrete_Rectangular Beam.rfa”

 Beams are also known as Structural Framing in Revit.

3. Navigate to Level 2 floor plan view.

4. Go to Structure tab -> Structure panel -> Beam (use “BM” as the
keyboard shortcut ).

5. From the type selector, select Concrete_Rectangular Beam12x24

type.

6. On the options bar, make sure the placement plane is level 2.

7. Select Modify|Place beams tab -> multiple panel -> On Grids

8. Select all grids from right to left as a cross selection.

 Note that beams will be placed between all columns. As there is no column at Grid C-1,
beams haven’t been placed there even through the grid was selected.

9. On multiple panel -> click Finish.

10. Press Esc to end the beam tool.

BEAM SYSTEM - EXERCISE
Beam Systems in Revit allow you to quickly create
structural beams that contain a series of individual
beams placed in parallel to the model.
1. Open
TutorialBeamSystem_Input_LearningRevitOnline
.rvt and navigate to the Level 2 floor plan
view.
2. Go to Structure tab -> Structure panel ->
Beam (use “BM” as the keyboard shortcut
).
3. From the type selector, select
Concrete_Rectangular Beam12x24 type.
4. Go to Edit Type -> Duplicate -> Create a
new type named 12 x 12. Change the
value of parameter “h” to be 12”. Say
OK.
5. Press Esc to end the beam tool.
BEAM SYSTEM - EXERCISE
6. Go to Structure tab -> Structure panel -> Beam
System
7. Modify|Place Beam System tab -> Beam system
panel -> Select Automatic Beam System
8. Properties palette -> Go to Pattern parameters ->
Layout Rule Parameter -> Select Fixed Number.
9. Number of Lines parameter -> type value as 3
10. On the options bar, select beam type as 12 x 12
11. Take your mouse towards the beam placed between
the Grid C-2 and C-3. Dotted Green lines will
appear showing where the cross-beams/secondary
beams will be placed.
12. Try to take your mouse towards the beam placed
between the Grid B-2 and C-2 to see how the
orientation of the dotted green lines change.
13. Click on the beam between C-2 and C-3 as in step
10.
14. The secondary beams will be placed. Press Esc to end
the tool.
