What is It

20th and 21st Century Multimedia Forms

The 20th century became an era that changed the world in an unprecedented
way. Historical events like the world wars, cold wars and it also became an era where
salient inventions became a changing point that gave advancement to the lives of the
21st century until today. This change that was brought by this era also affected the
music and other multimedia forms of arts such as the musical play, operas and ballet
performances.
Opera is defined as an art and music form in which singers and musicians
perform a dramatic work combining text (called Libretto) and a musical score. It is
accompanied by an orchestra or a smaller musical ensemble. In the Philippines
some opera singers and local theatres that stage local operas emerged in this era
like the Metropolitan Theatre, The Manila Grand opera, the Quiapo Theatre and the
Zorilla Theatre that staged the said to be first Filipino opera entitled “Sandugong
Panaginip” which was written by Pedro Paterno and songs composed by Ladislao
Bonus. The Zorilla theatre became the home of its first presentation in August
2,1902. Some of the famous Filipino opera’s singers are Nelia Manalo who played
the role of Violetta in the opera La Traviata, Mercedes Matias-Santiago as Lucia in
Lucia di Lamemoor and Jovita Fuentes as mimi in La Boheme.
Another form of multimedia form is the Musical Play which is defined as a
form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and
dance. It is basically a lighter form than the opera. Where its themes are usually
contemporary making it less intense and dramatic. Some of the most famous
personas in the musical plays are Rachelle Ann Go who played the role of Gigi
(2017) and Lea Salonga who played Kim(1991) which both staged in Miss Saigon in
their respective years as musical actress. Though this two has been recognized
abroad for their performances. Local artist in the Philippines also staged local
musical plays which were influenced by the history and famous literature in the
Philippine such as “Florante at Laura”, “Daragang Magayon” and “Atang-Dulang may
Musikal”.
The Last Multimedia form is the Ballet which is defined as an artistic dance
form performed to music which is a precise and highly formalized set of steps and
gestures. It is characterized by light, graceful, fluid movements and the use of pointe
shoes. Ballet in general started in Italy during the Renaissance period (around the
15th century). While ballet in the Philippine started in 1969, the proponent who made
ballet part of the Philippine multimedia form is Alice Reyes. The Filipino Ballet

5
presents folktales based on the local fables and epics from the different regions.
Some examples of Filipino ballets are the “Lola Basyang” and “Rama Hari”.
These multimedia forms are basically part of the Philippines rich culture and
heritage. Each Filipino musical play, opera, and ballet reflect its diverse and rich
culture, making it unique from the other country.
