Topic: Evaluating Students learning in Social Science ; Evaluating the Cognitive


Domain

Objectives: At the end of the discussion ,students will be able to :

 explain the different types of test


 evaluate how cognitive domain is used in social science
 understand the mentioned types of assessment

What is Cognitive Domain?

 The cognitive domain deals with how we acquire, process, and use
knowledge. It is the "thinking" domain. The cognitive domain aims to develop
the mental skills and the acquisition of knowledge of the individual. The
cognitive domain encompasses of six categories which include knowledge;
comprehension; application; analysis; synthesis; and evaluation.

How it will be used in Social Science?

 Cognitive domain mainly emphasizes remembering or reproducing


information, which have been learnt. This domain is knowledge or mind
based.
 Asking students to reflect on their experience. Helping students find new
solutions to problems. Encouraging discussions about what is being taught.
Helping students explore and understand how ideas are connected.

What is an Essay Test?

"An essay test is one that demands students to structure a lengthy written
response of several paragraphs." -William Weirsama

 Any written test that requires the examinee to write a sentence, a


paragraph, or lengthier passages is referred to as an essay test.

Purpose :

- To assess student's understanding and ability to think with subject matter


content. The other purpose is to assess students' writing abilities.

What is a Completion type of test?

 a type of test in which the participant must complete a missing phrase,


word, or letter in a written text. Nonverbal completion tests require the
supply of a missing number, symbol, or representation.
 It require a student to complete a statement that is missing one or more
key elements (words, phrases, numbers, etc.)
 may be used to assess different types of skills and knowledge, they are
generally used to test basic knowledge.

An essay, completion ,defining term or concept,filing the blanks and ______

Purpose :

- It is considered better for assessing lower levels of cognition, and are best to
check whether key facts have been memorized.

 It is a formative assessment activity that allows students to complete a


passage and populate blanks with words. Students get instant feedback,
so they'll know what words or concepts they need more practice with.

stakes. They are most valuable in large classes where it is difficult to assess
student understanding in real time.

 It measures a learner's ability to repeat sentences that contain regular past


tense forms and past participle forms
 A test of memory of mind in which learners are presented with stimuli and
then, after a delay, are asked to remember as many of the stimuli as
possible.
