AGENDA: PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 5 – GENDER EQUALITY IN THE POST

PANDEMIC (COVID 19) WORLD.

COUNTRY: PARAGUAY

Honorable Chair and fellow delegates,

In a country like Paraguay, the main concern regarding women over the past year afer the
COVID-19 pandemic is undone women's progress from numerous dimensions but mainly in the
economic sphere. The greatest impacts were observed in sectors where women are
overrepresented, leading to unemployment and unpaid work. The Encuesta Permanente de
Hogares (EPH) shows unemployment rates for women of Paraguay reaching 10.2 percent in
2020 corresponding to a downfall of 2.3 percent from 2019 and if we compared it with men
their unemployment percent is decreased by only 0.8 percent.

PROBLEMS AFFECTING THE COUNTRY

 Access to land ownership has been problematc for women in Paraguay. As agriculture is
the signifcant method of gaining the countryss economy if everyone would not be allow
to perform agriculture then there would be loss in the economy that may lead to
poverty.
 Consistent with the trends identfed by the Natonal Insttute of Statstcs (INE) of
Paraguay through its most recent Permanent Household Survey, the High-Frequency
Phone Survey showed that as of June, 2021(just afer the frst wave of COVID 19) ,56%
of women had worked in the week previous to the interview, a lower percentage than
that of men 78%.

Paraguay wants the United Natins ti:

 Support womenss employment without in gap in the gender between men and women.
 Begin a country program for 2024-2030 periods in alignment with Natonal policies and
program which would include the Natonal Development Plan (NPD) 2035, sectorial
programs, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed within the
2035 agenda.
 Internatonal collaboraton for promotng girls educaton and breaking the gender
stereotype.

THE MAIN POINT WHICH I WANT THE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS IS ABOUT ALLOWING
WOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY IN ALL THE MATTER OF THE COUNTRY, WHICH WOULD
HELP IN DECREASING THE POVERTY LEVEL OF PARAGUAY.
