16 July

Dear Mr Fleming,
At the annual conference you announced a training programme for the group.
However, we have had no further information about it.
I am concerned about the situation as a key member of staff has just left the
company because of the lack of professional training and he tells me that
other staff members are also considering leaving unless they get
the promised training.
Firstly, I would like to ask you if I could have the funds to arrange company
training for my staff. I have found a very reputable firm which provides
professional development courses.
Secondly, I would like to know what training you have planned for senior
managerial staff so that I can improve my own managerial and IT skills. The
company has grown so fast over the last year that I feel I need more
support. I look forward to receiving your response to my questions so that
the company can continue to move forward successfully in this region.

Yours sincerely,
Jonah Nkomo

Situation
You are the HR manager of a company that manufactures batteries for
electric cars. At a recent management meeting, the General Manager
said that he is worried that the factory staff are not as productive as they
should be and would like you to investigate the reasons and any problems.
He has asked you to compile a questionnaire to gather information from the
staff on how they feel about the following things:

- salary
- work environment
- amount of paid holiday
- working hours
- their line manager

Staff are asked to show how satisfied they are about the above things and to
make any other comments they wish.

All 200 members of staff have competed the questionnaire and you have put
the results into the following chart:
The General Manager has asked you to write a report outlining the results of
the questionnaire for the next board meeting. He asks you not to give details
of the numbers in the various categories, but to include an overview of
comments from staff. He also asks you to make recommendations on how
to deal with the areas of concern.

Write the report.

Situation
You are the assistant to Sandra Ghent, Sales Director of a company that sells
digital medical equipment. You have arranged for her to visit X Industries,
your main supplier, specifically to see their new factory in Scotland.
However, you have just received this letter to Ms Ghent from Mr
McKeith, General Manager of X Industries, about the visit.

Dear Ms Ghent,

Two-day visit to X Industries 4th – 6th April

I am writing to you to let you know that we have had to make some changes
to the planned programme next month to attend the opening of our new
factory here in Scotland. Unfortunately, there have been some delays and
the opening has been postponed until June.
However, we can confirm that you could still visit either factory in Wales or
Ireland in April where our products are currently manufactured.
I know that you are very interested in seeing the new state-of-the-art factory
in Scotland, so please could you let me know if you want to postpone your
visit until 10th June. If you prefer to come in April, I would appreciate it if
you could let me know which of the other factories you prefer to visit. In
addition, please let me know what else you would like to do while you are
here.
Please feel free to contact me if you have other queries.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,
Jim McKeith
General Manager, X Industries

Ms Ghent is away so you decided to send her an email about the letter and
the options available. You check the file and Ms Ghent's diary and make
some notes that follow.

- Must see new factory, so April no good

- June difficult: medical conferences 8th–10th and 18th–20th
- First week July possible
- Need to make sure delay won't affect our sales targets

Write the email.
