Numerical Method for Engineers worksheet -2

1. A trunnion has to be cooled before it is shrink fitted into a steel hub.

Figure 1 Trunnion to be slid through the hub after contracting

The equation that gives the temperature 𝑇𝑓 to which the trunnion has to be cooled to
obtain the desired contraction is given by;

𝐹(𝑇𝑓 ) = 𝑇𝑓 3 − 2𝑇𝑓 2 + 𝑇𝑓 − 5

Use the

A. Bisection method
B. False position method
C. Newton-Raphson method
D. Secant method

To find the roots of equations to find the temperature 𝑇𝑓 to which the trunnion has to be cooled to
neglect contraction (𝐹(𝑇𝑓 ) = 0). Conduct five iterations to estimate the root of the above
equation. Find the absolute relative approximate error and the number of significant digits at
least correct at the end of each iteration. Employ initial guesses of the root in between 1 and 4 for
the bisection method and false position method.

equation for the resulting elastic deflection curve is (see Figure b) given by

Use

A. Bisection method
B. False position method
C. Newton- Raphson method and
D. Secant method to determine the point of maximum deflection (that is, the value of x

where 𝑑𝑦/𝑑𝑥 = 0). Use the following parameter values in your computation: 𝐿 = 700 𝑐𝑚,
𝐸 = 40,000 𝐾𝑁⁄𝑐𝑚2 , 𝐼 = 10,000 𝑐𝑚4 , and 𝑤0 = 2.5 𝑘𝑁/𝑐𝑚

Conduct three iterations to determine your answer. Find the absolute relative approximate error
and the number of significant digits at least correct at the end of each iteration. Employ initial

2
If R = 4 m, to what depth must the tank be filled so that it holds 30 m3?

Use

A. Bisection method
B. False position method
C. Newton- Raphson method
D. Secant method

Conduct three iterations to determine your answer. Find the absolute relative approximate error
and the number of significant digits at least correct at the end of each iteration. Employ initial
guesses of the depth (h) in between 0 and 3 for the bisection method and false position method
