weather? Why here in the Philippines we
only have 2 seasons and other has 4?

Thank you for sharing! This phenomenon has

something to do with the position of a place or a
country on Earth.
 But how can we find the position of a
place on Earth?
 Have you ever wondered why people can
easily locate a place without even going
there? What are the things we use to
locate some place?
 How pilot on a place knows where exactly Students may answer:
to land? Different tools can be used to
find the position of a certain place, can - By the use of GPS, maps, compass, radar
you give an example? and globe Ma’am
Correct! Some of these are compass, maps, radar,
GPS and globe. But in this lesson, we will only focus
on Map and Globe.

MAP

A two-dimensional graphical representation of an

area, land or sea, depicting physical features.

GLOBE

A three-dimensional spherical model of the Earth

The teacher will ask:

 Observe the Map and the Globe, what do Student will answer:
they share in common? - Both are made of horizontal and vertical
lines
Correct! Both the map and the globe are made of
horizontal and vertical lines which intersect with
each other, but we cannot see these lines on the
surface of the earth, hence we call it imaginary
lines.
The teacher will emphasize that these lines are
very important in locating places in Earth

 What describe the lines of latitude other
- form circles that are smaller at the poles
- do not meet
 What is the reference line when - the equator
determining the latitude?

Students will answer:

 What describe the lines of longitude - are not parallel to each other
- do not form circles
- meet at the poles (or extend from pole to
pole)
 What is the reference line when - The prime meridian
determining the longitude?

LATITUDE Materials

- Horizontal imaginary lines that run from

East to West of a Map or a Globe
- Measured in Degree ()

EQUATOR

- The starting line in measurement of

latitude is the Equator
- The Equator is assigned a latitude value
of 0 degree (0 latitude)
- Divides the earth into Northern
Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

- Northern Hemisphere is an area located

above the equator up to the North pole
- Extend above the equator to 90  N going
up

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE
- Southern Hemisphere is an are located
down to the south pole
- Extends below to the equator to 90S
going down

- Notable latitudes shown in the pictures

and is given special names
- The latitude of a place has something to
do with its climate

TROPICS

- The part of the world between the tropic

of cancer and the tropic of Capricorn is
called TROPICS
- Countries located in this zone experience
tropical Climate
- Annual average temperature is above 18
C
The teacher will ask:
 Where do you think is the Philippines?
Very good! This is the reason why Philippines is a Students may answer:
tropical country we experience warm - In between the tropic of Cancer and
temperature tropic of Capricorn Ma’am

NORTHERN TEMPERATE ZONE

SOUTHERN TEMPERATE ZONE

- Between the tropic of cancer and the

arctic circle is the Northern Temperate
Zone
- And between the tropic of Capricorn and
Antarctic circle is Southern Temperate
Zone
- Countries Located in these Zones
experience four seasons
The teacher will ask:
 Can you tell me those seasons?

 Good job! These seasons are experience

in countries between tropic of cancer and
northern hemisphere as well as in
between in tropic of Capricorn and
southern hemisphere why do you think
so?

Verry good!

POLAR/FRIGID ZONE Students will answer:

- Those seasons are winter, spring,
summer and Autumn Ma’am
- Because they are located in between Hot
and cold temperature. Their location has
something to do with their climates.

- Areas within the arctic circle and

Antarctic circle are called polar or Frigid
zones
- Countries located in these zones
experience cold temperature all year
round

Aside the horizontal imaginary lines, we also have

vertical imaginary lines

LONGITUDE

- Vertical imaginary lines that run from

North to South of a Map or Globe
- Measured as Degree ()

PRIME MERIDIAN

- The starting point of measuring longitude

is the prime meridian
- Located on 0
- Referred to as 0 longitude
- The prime meridian dived the earth into
another pair of hemispheres

WESTERN HEMISPHERE

- Extends from the prime meridian to 180

going to the left

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

- Extends from the prime meridian to 180

going right

Elaborate
PPT
To sum it up, the teacher will emphasize that the
closer the latitude to the equator the warmer
the temperature and the closer it is to the pole,
the colder the temperature.

The teacher will ask the class:

● Can you give me an example of countries
live in polar/frigid zones ?
● What season they experience? The students may answer:
- Countries like Ice land, Alaska, Greenland
etc.
- They experience cold temperature all
year-round Ma’am and because of this,
they only have cold summers and cold
winters.
- The Philippines, Maldives, Peru, etc.
- Countries located in tropic areas
● Verry good! How about countries in experience wet seasons and dry seasons
tropic areas? Ma’am
- Europe, some parts in Asia like Japan and
● What seasons do they experience? Korea, Canada etc.
- They go through 4 seasons, the Winter,
spring, summer and autumn Ma’am.

● Good job! How about countries in

Northern and southern temperate zone?
● What season do they experienced?
Verry Good!
The teacher will emphasize the importance of
coordinate system
You’ve learned that the latitude and longitude
degrees represent the exact places on earth. In this
lesson you understand that when this latitude and
longitude combines, we can locate any place on a
map and a globe. You’ve learned that there are two
imaginary lines that can be found in a map or a
globe, the latitudes and the longitudes

Remember that the equator is located at 0 latitude

it divides the map or a globe into northern and
southern hemisphere while the prime meridian is
located in 0 longitude it is also divide the map or a
globe into Eastern and western Hemisphere.

In our next lesson we will apply these concepts to

locate places on Earth.
Evaluate
A quiz will be provided to the students. PPT presentation
They will Identify the imaginary lines in the Globe Activity sheet
used in locating places by labeling the pictures
Answer will be provided by the teacher.

Answers to the quiz:

1. North pole
2. Arctic circle
3. Tropic of cancer
4. Equator
5. Tropic of Capricorn
6. Antarctic circle
7. South pole
8. Southern Hemisphere
9. Northern Hemisphere
10. Westhern Hemisphere
11. Eastern Hemisphere
12. Prime meridian
