Note: - The radiation level should not exceed 0.75 mr/hr at
barricaded area.
According to NDTCCS used collimator the no. of
HVL is 4.
The HVL of tungsten is 3.5mm.
The HVL of steel is 13 mm.
The HVL of concrete is 43 mm.
The HVL of lead is 5 mm
Factors help to reduce the dose rate and cordoning distance.
Cordoning distance for the gamma ray Ir-192 depend upon the various factors as mentioned
below. The dose rate at the cordoning distance should not exceed 7.5 µS/hr.

1. Shielding of many barriers such as sand and soil barrier, concrete wall and beam,
metallic structure, vessel with water etc.
2. Job thickness help to reduce the dose rate as well as cordoning distance.
3. Collimator is the best shielding. The use of collimator is depend upon the various
radiography technique. The collimator use by NDT CCS is made up of tungsten having
four HVL.
4. Cordoning distance is different in different source strength. The cordoning distance will
decrease as decreasing of source strength.

We can find out the cordoning distance of different curie strength by using the
Inverse Square Law.

I1d1 = I2d2
Where,

I1= Initial intensity d1= Initial distance

I2= Final intensity d2= Final distance

Given specific gamma constant is, (RHM)

1 Ci. At 1 meter 0.55 R/hr or 5500µS/hr

1 Ci. At 1 foot 5.2 R/hr or 52000 µS/hr

The HVL Of
Depleted Uranium = 2.5 mm
