I. Readings/Discussions:
Measurement is the act of determining the exact size, length, width and height.
Width is the horizontal distance from one side to the other side. Height is measure of
vertical distance from one end to another. Length is the distance between two points or
the measure of how long an object is.

Your previous Self – Learning Home Task discussed about the different measuring
tools. This time, the measuring tools will be expounded based on their functions on a
specified task.

Measuring Tool Description Function
1. Ruler It is made of plastic, Used to measure length
cardboard or steel which is along its edge. It can

an L-shape measuring tool frames and get the right
that is made of a piece of angles. It can also be
wood or a metal. It is used for markings to

centimeter (cm) at the lower
portion. The upper portion
shows the English units of
inch that have 16
increments.
4. Divider
It is made of metal and it Used for measuring,
consists of two straight transferring, or marking
adjustable legs hinged off distances and for lay-
together. outing arcs and circles.

5. Protractor It is made of transparent Used to measure angles
plastic or metal and is in degrees.
divided into 180 equal parts.
3
Steps:
1. Place the end of the ruler to the very first line and mark it zero. This is lined
up with the end of your object.
2. Look at the opposite end of the object you're measuring and find the last
number on your ruler that is alongside the object.
3. Then, get the measurement in either inch, centimeter or millimeter.
B. Pull-push rule
Steps:
1. Place the tape measure on the object you are measuring.
2. Put the tape measure hook at the edge of the object.
3. Start measuring. You can get the units of either millimeter, centimeter,
foot, or meter.
C. Try square
Steps:
1. Place try square blade across the material you want to test or mark.
2. The thicker part of the handle should extend over the edge of the object to
let the blade lie flat across the surface.
3. Hold the handle against the edge of the material.
4. The blade can now positioned at a 90 degrees angle to the edge. You now
get the measurement.
4
D. Divider

Steps:
1. Loosen the screw
2. Spread the legs.
3. Place one leg on radius and the other leg on the circumference.
4. Then, tighten the screw again. Make an arc or circle.
E. Protractor
Source:https://etc.usf.edu/clipart/42000/42019/pro_100_42019.htm
Steps:
1. Place the vertex or point of an angle at the origin.
2. Draw a line from a vertex.
3. Position the base line along one of the arms of the angle.
4. Get its measurement.
Is it easy to measure an object? How about calculating? What about doing both
measuring and calculating? What is more interesting for you to do? Do you find both of
them easy?
In your previous lesson, you were taught about selecting measuring instruments.
You have learned that there are different measuring tools and each of these tools
performs a specific task.
5
Measurement is the process of getting the dimension of an object. Dimension,
as defined in a dictionary, is a measurable extent of some kind, such as length, width,
height, and depth. It is a measure of the size, distance of an object, region, or space in
one direction, in simpler terms, it is the measurement of the length, width, and height of
anything. Dimension is present in every steel or metal craft design.
Description Figure
│
1. One-dimensional (or 1D)
2. Two-dimensional ( or 2D)
Calculation, on the other hand, is the process of determining how much materials
you need on a specific steel design. This involves mathematical operations and
formulas. Formulas are designed to help you calculate the dimension of an object.
If you look around in your neighborhood, you see different designs made of steel.
The pictures you see below are some of the examples.
In order for you to get the needed steel in the design you want, you need to use
measuring tools to work out on their dimensions. Every shape in steel product has a
corresponding formula.
6
Perimeter, as defined in the dictionary, is the total distance around any figure. To
get the perimeter, add all the sides of the figure.
Triangle
A triangle is a flat shape with three straight sides.
Perimeter = a + b + c
a c
Triangle Where: a is side
b is base
b
c is side
SQUARE
A square is a shape that has four sides with equal sizes.
Shape Sides Formula Object
a
Perimeter = a + a + a + a
a a
Square Where a is for side
a
7
Finding the perimeter of square
P = a+a+a+a
Where: P = Perimeter
a = side
Example: What is the perimeter of a square, if the side is 10 m?
Solution: P = a+a+a+a
P = 10m + 10m + 10m + 10m
P = 40 m
RECTANGLE
A rectangle is a shape with four sides in which two opposite sides are equal to
each other.
Shape Sides Formula Object
l
Perimeter= l + l + w + w
Rectangle w w
Where l = length
l
w = width

GUIDE
For the Teacher: Advise the students to read the reading and discussion portion before
they attempt to answer the practice exercises. Going through the parts sequentially will
help them understand easily the topic.
For the Learner: Read through the self-learning home task from the first part to the last
part. Doing so, will help you understand better the topic.
For the Parent/Home Tutor: Assist your child and make sure that he/she reads the self-
learning home task from beginning to end to ensure proper understanding of the
concepts.
