that was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Fluor and Eskom.
Purpose of the Job: Knowledge of substation design philosophy and standards. Technology
selection, site identification, SLD, GA and site plan development. Equipment selection and
earthing design, insulator and hardware selection, conductor and shield wire selection,
material specification and technical support for construction
Key Performance Areas (KPA’s): Design a product for the client that details all the technical
aspects of the design and highlights errors. Proficient in CAD, CDEGS, and other related design
tools for substation. Strong knowledge of substation design philosophy and standards.
Technology selection, site identification, SLD, GA and site plan development. Competent in
equipment selection and earthing design, insulator and hardware selection, conductor and
shield wire selection, material specification and technical support for construction.
Knowledgeable in creation of preliminary and final designs for substations, including earth grid
designs. Present at the design committees within the specified timelines to ensure on-time
delivery of the final design. Conceptualize the design and discuss it with the client for first
approval or gain buy-in. Suggest designs that will meet clients’ requirements with minimum
costs. Validate all design aspects and processes of all designs. Manages project design within
budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Consult clients on discipline-related issues which
include their own designs or other designs. Provide advisory services to clients on all design-
related matters. Responsible to identify leads, and opportunities for work, to create Sourcing of
Work. Identify any further shortcomings and discuss with Line Managers. Leverages experience
by mentoring and supporting training.
Other competencies and requirements: 3-5 years’ experience high voltage substations
and/or overhead line Civil. Encourages an organizational culture that embodies TAP Values.
