EXPERIMENT NO: 4
ORIGIN AND DESTINATION SURVEY
AIM:
The study was carried out in order to identify the origin, destination, Frequency, Type of
vehicle used, Trip purpose, Occupancy etc of passengers moving from one point to other.
THEORY:
Origin-destination studies serve as a foundation for transportation planning and are essential to
understanding traffic patterns. O-D studies look at where vehicles are coming from, where they
are going, why people are traveling, when the trips occur, and what types of vehicles are
traveling.
OD study is to determine the travel pattern of an area/city. We can find out the origin (start
point of travel) and destination (end point of travel) for each person in the city. This will help
in analysis of the travel pattern observed in the city. The travel pattern is determined by desire
lines which shows us the number of people going from one origin to another destination in the
form of lines with varying thickness. If 200 people go from origin A to destination B, and 100
people go from origin A from destination C => AB is represented by a thicker line than AC
and so on.
The OD survey can be done with the help of following methods
1. Road side interview
2. License plate method
3 Home based interview
4.Tag on car method
5. Post card method
SATELLITE IMAGES OF THE SURVEY LOCATION
PROCEDURE:
1. The O-D survey started at 2:30 pm by collecting response from the road users.
2. The basic questions that were asked during the survey includes the origin, destination,
frequency of trip, occupancy, trip purpose.
3. Also, the mode and trip length were also identified.
4. The data collection continued up to 3:30pm.
5. Based on the response obtained, each response to the questions asked were distributed in
pie chart format to find out their composition.
6. Also, the O-D matrix was generated using the response data.

▪ What is the mode of travel

▪ What is the origin of the trip
▪ What is the purpose of the travel
